I got a $1500 dollar job next semester!

My financial aid package is a mix of grants, loans, and work study. Do the grants and loans count towards my actual tuition and the work study towards personal expenses, books, ect? The loan amount is pretty high as if it might be filler, so I was wondering if that was the case.

I read somewhere that if you have WS, you can do 20hours max per week? Is that for WS jobs or jobs period?

Pugfug - That is the maximum for federal WS. If you want another job outside of WS that is your choice and nothing to do with the school. However I would not recommend working more than 20 hours a week until you see how you are doing with the school work - unless your financial situation makes it essential.

Ariana - Technically the whole financial aid package counts toward your COA which generally includes tuition and fees, books, room and board, miscellaneous and travel. The way my Ds school works is that the scholarships, grants and loans are credited direct to the bursars account. Tuition & fees, books, and room and board are charged to the bursars account. If the amounts charged to the account exceed the amount of the credits then we will owe money - which can come from us(parents) or her (WS or job). If the credited amounts exceed the charges the difference is paid to her at the end of the semester. Her financial aid package seems to have worked out that most of the above mentioned charges will be covered by the scholarships/grants/loans with maybe a little over or under. So in her case we consider her WS money is hers to cover her personal expenses (unless she makes some sort of excessive charge to the bursars account). I don't know if the finaid award is intentionally planned to work out this way - I am assuming so as the figures work out almost exactly that the WS is equivilant to @ the miscellaneous and travel portions of her COA. Our EFC is quite low this year for various reasons - a higher EFC would make the picture quite different.

Be glad you got the work study...we were told D not eligible due to our EFC!
