I got a 5 on my AP Calculus BC test. What math course should I take?

Hi, I got a 5 on my AP Calc BC test. What math course should I take freshman year?

I am not majoring in math. I am planning to apply to Haas.

Choosing the First Math Course at UC Berkeley - UC Berkeley Mathematics

Take 53 if you think you've mastered Calc BC (a 5 may or may not give that information). Otherwise, take 1B.

Someone from my high school got a 5 on Cal BC, generally one of the top students in the class got a C in Math 1B Honor. The competition is really fierce.
If you plan to apply to Haas and you think you know the material well enough, take Math 1B again. You can revisit the concepts, get good grade, and prepare for Math 53.

At the on campus Math-Science presentation for prospects last month your specific question was asked and the response from the math representatives there was that AP Calc was not the same as what was presented at Berkeley and they strongly recommend taking it again. There was even a handout to that effect there. The same info is here http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_AP.html

thank you everyone

take 1b or 53
I would recommend 1b since it also covers differential equation which you will use in 54.

Expect 1B to be harder to be most of the high school calc class.

I'm a prospective EECS major (senior in HS right now) taking second-year calculus (first semester was multivariate calc and second semester is linear algebra/differential eqns) .. I was thinking I'll probably need to "retake" this year's course (but not last year's. I got a 5 on the BC exam) so is that Math 53 what you guys are talking about? and what would i take second semester of freshman year at cal? math 54?

thanks :D

I would recommend 53. This course may be tougher material wise, but it's not a harsh weeder like 1b where you have to compete with all the premeds.

nice thread....yea so i will be a frosh pre-med
i got 5 on BC, i think i will take math 53 as there is less competition and newer material (so less chance of falling asleep ;)
any suggestions? i guess i will review calc in the summer as i got a 5 on BC in junior year

but campusbuddy suggests that Math 53 is more competitive thatn 1B...

http://www.thecampusbuddy.com/Course.php?title=Multivar%20Calculus&dept_code=MATH&catlg_no=53&college_id=1001

vs.

http://www.thecampusbuddy.com/Course.php?title=Calculus&dept_code=MATH&catlg_no=1B&college_id=1001

thoughts?

math 53 is actually a lot harder than math 1b.

dt_, most eecs students took 53 and 54 their freshman year fall and spring semester respectively.

If you bypassed 53 through CC, I suggest you go straight to 54. You probably do not need math 53 to be successful in eecs. In fact, none of the eecs classes uses 53 concepts. and 53 is a lot harder than 54. You can take 110 in the spring.

My roommate suffered through 1B while I breezed through 53. I recommend 53.

what is taught in 53 and 54? i might want an easy math class first sem so i can focus on physics :D speaking of which, how's the difficulty of that?

If you're just intended Haas, don't bother taking any math classes. A 5 on BC Math will pass you out of the Haas math requirement along with the Economics Major Math Requirement.
