I got a 6 in the January SAT essay because I had a mind blank and didn't prepare thoroughly. I ended up with a 710 for writing.
I'm worried that this will influence my college application because the admission officers will see the 6. I thought about retaking but I'm not sure whether I'll get anything better than a 6 next time because I'm just not a good writer under time limit and pressure.
What do you guys think I should do?

Retake it. I had a similar situation and improved my essay score. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/645763-how-write-12-essay-just-10-days.html?highlight=write+essay This thread was very helpful for me. You should try it out.

P.S. Don’t send January score to colleges, if you are planning to retake. Reason is that colleges will see not only a 6 score, but also the actual essay you wrote.

Colleges see the actual essay?! What?? Did not know that!

Natalle, I’m in the same boat as you. 710 writing score, with a 6 on the essay. I’m not sure what to do either, but I’m glad I’m not alone. 25 minutes just isn’t enough time. Good luck to you.

I didn’t know they see your actual essay?

Wait…where does it say colleges see the actual essay? I thought that was an SSAT matter, not SAT.

some colleges use your essay in the admissions process. Look up certain universities on the CB website to see it. I know U Penn looks at it.

olleger - I’m aware that the majority of top colleges look at the writing score and the essay subscore…however, never have I heard that they actually see the essay I wrote, word for word.

^ I wasn’t talking about the score, I was talking about the essay itself ; ).

Hmmm…that’s interesting. I’ve seen that before, but I always thought CB likely meant that colleges would compare the subscore to the application essay…I can see how your interpretation makes a little more sense, though.

Anyways, thanks for the info, olleger. =)

np

check each school because they have these breakdown for all of them. Good thing NU doesn’t read my essay = D

If you’ve got straight A’s and your college app essays are good, the colleges are going to know your six was a fluke… they aren’t dumb.
