I got a B =(

So in the mid year report that harvard is going to see... I got a B in AP chem this year and all the rest are straight As. Also chem has NOTHING to do with me intended field of study. Will admissions not really look into it or could be a make it or break it find of deal if I'm a borderline applicant.

Also I am a straight A student so it will stand out... I'm just terrible at chem haha.
Thanks in advance.

Well, i’m in an even worse position. I’m a straight A student but there are only B’s and C’s on my midyear report… Honestly I don’t think they’d mind that much. I mean, common! It’s senior year!

Well, there will be applicants that look just like you, but without a senior slump. If you were the admissions committee, who would you choose?

but the thing is, there won’t be anyone like me. Yeah they might have similar scores and grades, but no one (or at least very few) has similar activities as I do.

If you are in a position where someone can replace you just because they don’t get senior slump, I doubt you’ll get in anyways without the slump.

Bottom line: it’s the whole shyt they’re lookin’ at.

What’s a B on a 100 point scale?

I’m a straight-A student too, but got a B+ in BC calc first quarter. I was upset at first (even though my intended major is English), but now I’m not worried. I seriously doubt something like that will push them into not accepting you, even at Harvard. I know it sounds lame but they’re looking for more than grades. If they decide they want you, they’ll want you despite the B. If they don’t want you, getting an A in that class wouldn’t have made a difference.

Okay, sure, if they’re looking at two identical candidates but one got an A in AP Chem and the other got a B, I’m sure they’d take the A. But no two candidates are identical, and being Harvard, they have to evaluate you on more than your grades.

I got a B in calculus senior year and still got accepted, so don’t worry so much.

You’re out of the running. Sorry but a B just doesn’t cut it when you get to the Ivies.

Yeah, straight As only in the Ivies please.

…Is this thread for real?

I hope you know those last two posts are sarcastic.

^Not necessarily. At the Harvard info session, they basically said that you shouldn’t bother applying unless you have straight As (I would assume that includes A minuses), not As and Bs.

One B won’t hurt you, considering that it’s only one B, it’s a mid-year grade and not a final grade, it’s in a difficult class, and it’s not in a class that’s relevant to your intended area of study. You should be fine. However, a lot of Bs and Cs on the midyear report is BAD. That shows serious senioritis. Consider yourself rejected, captrick.

don’t worry. lol. nobody’s perfect, and a B will not make admissions officers like “***. A B? I NEVER HEARD OF A B. REJECT” -____-

ignore the ■■■■■■ that state that you will be rejected etc.

I received a B in AP French, and I’m not panicking, since I’m different from all the applicants also :P

Unless you received a C, or your grades contract a lot compared to previous grades, then you should not worry (:

Good luck!

My brother had a B- in AP Chem his Junior year. He was accepted into Columbia University for Engineering. International student. No hooks. Don’t worry.

I’m applying with a C and 2 B’s from 1st semester Junior year. Straight A’s all the way back n’ forth though, so I hope that makes up for it. :P
