So my October SAT score came out and it was 1530(730 800) with 6/4/7 essay score. My last SAT score from August was 1400 with 6/6/7. I am happy and sad at the same time because I improved and messed up at the same time. Now my last SAT opportunity is in December but I am not sure whether I should take the SAT or a SAT subject test. I want to apply for Carnegie Mellon CS during regular application.

I can take the SAT again but I can’t say for sure that my SAT score will remain because I have never gotten higher than 1480 in 15 practice tests and I think my 1530 was mostly luck

I have 800 in Math2, 790 in Physics, 800 in Chinese with Listening. I can go for Chemistry and get a 700+.
Which is the best option for me?
I am an international, wishing to apply to CMU, Cornell, Rice, GIT, and MIT. My TOEFL is 117.
Some schools are going as far as dropping the essay score requirement entirely, which speaks to how much weight goes into it. They will care far more about your essay and supplement, where they get to read your writing, not just see a number whose derivation is quite formulaic.
Yeah, I’m in a very similar situation. I got a 1520 but only a (7/5/5) on my essay. I’m not sure if I should retake it as well.
I agree with @PengsPhils I think this has become an overall issue with both the SAT and ACT. My child got a 35 on the ACT but scored low on the essay. It creates issues because some schools don’t require the essay—but then it is part of the report you send, while others do require it. Bottom line: It appears IMO that the above is correct. Schools are placing less importance on it. it seems to me you are done with testing with the SAT 1530 and the amazing SAT subject test 2 scores. Good luck
