I got a D in AP Calc

ok so....i've been accepted to my first choice... ucsd and all the other uc's i applied to. My grades have been really good up to this point, except i dont know what happened senior yr so i got a D in AP calc...i hate that class! i cant focus at all in there...but it was a very high D and the teacher still didnt give me the C even with so much e/c i did. Anyways my other grades are A's and B's. I am freaking out right now because im scared ucsd will take away my admissions because of one stupid class i messed up in, especially since they have a very strict rule about getting D's or F's in senior yr. Has anyone been in this situation and what happened? Also will community colleges let me repeat the course during summer? I heard you have to send colleges a letter telling them you messed up, but im hesitating to do that...can someone share their experiences or give me some advice cause im stressing so much right now.

thanks a lot.

call SD, but if I recall, you are fine as long as you maintain a B average for all of senior year.

How did you get a D in AP Calc? It's not that hard. It seems like all of the good applicants do poorly in that class. My GPA overall sucks (3.2) but AP Calc is a breeze for me.

I guess I'll never understand why AP Calc seems to be the breaking class.

Math is just not my thing. I absolutely hate it, i regret taking that class so bad.

wow i know exactly how you feel

im just gonna take my C in AP Calc and run

hate that class

A class is only as hard as a teacher makes it :)

The point distribution can make it difficult. At my school, the BC Calc teacher makes tests 100 points, homeworks 5. There are five or so homework assignments to a test. The tests are hard, too. I'm only in PreCalc this year, but it's the same teacher. I've really struggled with the grading system. You really have to know your stuff for his tests, or you're screwed, sometimes for the whole quarter.

please be more specific. Is this AP calc AB or AP calc BC? Theres a BIG DIFFERENCE between the two

Don't worry about it- I got into UCSB, West Point, and Annapolis with a D in AP Calculus AB (for first semester). Granted, UCSB still doesn't know about that D, but with West Point and Annapolis both in the bag (they both knew before they accepted me) it's not a big issue since they are my top choice schools.

Sorry. It's AP Calc AB

spectrez-
what was the policy for West Point and Annapolis concerning senior yr grades? And my prob is not that i didnt get accpted, i just dnt know if my admission still stands after i send my transcript.

"The point distribution can make it difficult. At my school, the BC Calc teacher makes tests 100 points, homeworks 5."

At my school, past AGS3 (algebra/geometry/statistics) you don't get any homework points. You either do good on the tests or don't get an A in the class.

romanigypsyeyes: you 'win'! :p

How hard are tests, though? Is it generally agreed that they suck, or are they doable?

The average in my PreCalc class on most tests is a C, or lower. The class average is usually around there. There's 2-3 As per test, in a class of 26 or so.

Most of the time they dont care. As long as you are upfront about it and do okay in the other classes to maintain a consistent GPA, you're fine.

yellowturtle,

You know, I really don't know their policy on senior year grades. I do know they do rescind acceptances just like any normal college however.

Now this is just my opinion, but I guess barely passing an AP class (as in a D) isn't SO bad considering it is a college level class and you are technically passing it. I do think however that if you get an F in any class, especially an AP class that directly pertains to your major, major red flags will be raised.

Again, that's just my opinion. My advice? E-mail the school and let them know. Of course theres the possibility they won't even respond to you, but hey, at least you told them.

hey i got the same thing too unfortunately :[ and i just sent a longgg and i mean LONGG email telling that I got a D in that class. i have been calling them like 5 times a day now lol i actually dropped out of that class because the teacher wouldnt let me stay in there .. and i don't know what to do anymore. i got into ucsd too but now i'm freaking scared out of my mind that i'm gonna get my admission revoked by them because i'm not meeting their requirements .. anyone else know what i can do about this situation??? ucsd has been my dream school for such a long time and i worked hard in that class .. but i ended up getting a bad grade :[ im suppose to fail but somehow, i negotiated with the teacher so he gave me a D instead of a fail but still .. its gonna affect me somehow .. ahh someone please help me :[

I wish my only grades were the test! I got low B's and B-'s on all my homeworks this year and we have notebook checks...and I don't even have one. Killed my A's on the tests.

I've been told the tests suck.
