I am a rising junior and I got a really bad score for the US History subject test. I didn't even get a 700. I got 620 for it (horrible compared to the numerous 770+). I've got a lot of school work to do for my junior year and I don't know if I am going to have time to study for the test... Also, I am relatively weak in the Social Studies subject. Should I retake the test for US History?

If so, when should I take it?

Let’s see… so you took the SAT II in sophomore year, more or less? That’s really rare in my parts. Anyways, if you’re going to retake, you should retake after taking the AP class and test, assuming you haven’t already and you’re going to. If you aren’t doing the AP, then you probably shouldn’t retake at all unless your major will be involved with Social Studies. However, I assume it is since you take that as your subject test even though you’re weak in it, I mean, the subject tests should be areas of strength or interest. If you haven’t even taken the US History class (I’m not sure about your curriculum), then you should retake after taking the class. You seem dedicated because you’re taking SATs earlier than most (in real life, not just in these forums), but your schedule is supposedly packed, so self-studying is out of question.

Conclusion: If you’re taking another US History class or the like, take the SAT II after the class. If you’re not taking another US History class, then don’t retake unless your major is involved or for some other reason you want a high score. If you must retake but you don’t have another class and you can’t self-study…pray to God or cheat, or maybe just take another Social Studies test if you can. Good luck.

P.S. 620 isn’t that bad, unless you’re hoping for an Ivy league or top tier college

*Also, I am relatively weak in the Social Studies subject. *

^I can’t believe of all the subjects you could’ve chosen, you decided to take a subject test in U.S. history :(. No, it’s fine. Just don’t submit the score.

hey, a 620 isn’t that bad! and honestly, i don’t think it would be worth retaking. you will get the best score while the class is fresh in your mind. do you know what you got on your ap test yet? and plus, you’re only sophomore. unles you’re trying to get into harvard, i wouldn’t worry about it too much.

If you’re planning on taking it AP, definitely retake it! I got an 800 on mine without any real extra preparation before the June test date. It’d been since the day before the AP exam that I last really studied. I skimmed through some of my notes the night before but that was it.

For subject tests, take the ones you’re strongest at. If you do well in Math, take MathII or MathI. If your good in science, take Bio/chem/physics (after you take the corresponding AP class).
