I got accepted.. I think?

So I just got an acceptance letter from Central Michigan.. but I don't get it.

I applied online quite some time ago, and a few weeks later got a letter in the mail saying "We have received your application, but still need the following to complete the admissions process:"

Then there were a few boxes, and the two that were checked off were "Transcripts" and "SAT and/or ACT Scores". I hadn't sent them in, so it made sense.

Today I got a letter in the mail from Central. On the front of the envelope it says "Congratulations on your admission to Central Michigan University!"

Inside there are two letters, both of which start off with "Congratulations! You have been accepted for admission to Central Michigan University!"

One talks about what I can expect as a CMU student, and one talks about how it's imperative that I send them my final transcripts upon graduation.

There's also an orientation fee card that, according to the pamphlet that came along with it, will reserve me a spot at Central once I send it in with the orientation fee.

The problem is, I never sent in my transcript or SAT scores. I was going to eventually, but I haven't yet.

Is it at all possible that they contacted my counselor and he gave them both of them? Don't I have to personally send them my SAT scores through CollegeBoard.com?

On the other hand, if they haven't received the necessary academic documents, there's no way they would send me an acceptance letter or anything, right? They wouldn't possibly send me a "You are accepted, but we still need your SAT scores and transcript to be sure" letter, right?

This is my first acceptance/rejection letter from any college ever, so I have no idea if this is typical or not.

Thanks so much for any information you can give me. I want to be excited, but I'm apprehensive about it because this doesn't make any sense to me.

Thanks!

Nobody has any idea?

After much deliberation and the use of complex mathematical models, the following advice has been chosen:

Call the admissions office and ask what the heck is going on.

Thanks for the help. It's 12:30 AM on a Sunday morning, and offices aren't open until Monday at 8am. I was freaking out about this a little bit, and hoped someone could help me out on here.

Thanks, though.

It isn't unheard of for students with incomplete applications to receive acceptances.

At the same time, it also isn't unheard of for a college to make a mistake and send a letter to the wrong person.

Unfortunately, either one is possible, so I doubt we'll be of much help in determining whether you're really in or if it's an error.

Thanks, GS. I appreciate you helping me out, even if it's not possible to give me a definitive answer.

I'm really hoping I got in.

Unless this letter was supposed to go to someone else, though, can they receive my transcript and be like "Ehh.. just kidding." Even if I've sent in my orientation fee and everything?

I'm sure you had to go through your school's guidance office or your counselor for counselor recs and stuff, right? It is possible your counselor had a transcript and stuff sent. Also, when I applied, my HS transcript had my SAT scores right on it (this was good enough for some colleges... others, however, wanted it to be sent through collegeboard... either way, all colleges would have seen my SAT score right on my transcript). Yours might be similar.

Alright, thanks so much for the help.

I'm hoping this is all cleared up, I sent CMU Admissions an e-mail and should have a response Monday.

Pull for this being the real deal for me :)

This is just a guess and only applies if you are in state, but...since the class of 2008 is the first class in the state of Michigan to have taken the ACT by state mandate, I wonder if the state releases scores to the state schools.

Were your scores strong compared with last year's admits? http://www.ires2.cmich.edu/cds/CDS2007_2008.pdf

I realize that my response wasn't very helpful, but it's just the best way to handle the question (you'd be surprised how many people don't actually think of calling the Admissions Office when they're troubled over something). I believe that you were probably accepted (as others have said, your counselor may have sent the items in), but it's better to hear from the college itself for confirmation than us who would rather not accidentally give you false hope.

One school that I applied to EA wanted my 1st quarter senior year grades (which were not reflected on my transcript by the application deadline).

They sent me a letter.

The next day, my counselor got a letter.

The day after that, they faxed my counselor.

And the day after that, they called my counselor on the phone, who gave them 1st quarter grades verbally.

2 weeks later, acceptance letter.

You can call and ask, but my guess is that your counselor gave them the necessary info.

Schmoomcgoo-

Yeah, My SAT scores are considerably better than the averages (Reading 75th percentile is 580, I scored 610; Math 75th percentile is 600, I scored 620).

My GPA, though, is not good at all. It's a 2.45, and according to that document, only 1% of all applicants with that GPA got in.

EDIT: My GPA does have an upward trend, however, and is hovering around a 3.0 for the first semester of this (my senior) year.

Does anyone else have any helpful information for me?

I should find out for sure tomorrow, and will let you guys know.

You should CALL tomorrow, and not wait in hopes that someone will read and answer your email.

I was very much planning on that. I just e-mailed because I couldn't call and there was a chance that I could get a reply before tomorrow.

Tomorrow morning I'll be in my counselor's office, and if he can't clear it up we'll call the Admissions office and see what's up.

just call and ask. From my experience and from what people on CC have asked in the past, it means nothing usually because the college is just missing some material and would like everything before they make a decision. No offense, but I think you are reading too much into it as I was when I got a similar letter. Good luck though ! :)

But if they didn't have enough information to make a decision, why send me an envelope containing two letters that said "Congratulations on your acceptance to Central Michigan University", as well as an Orientation Card (asking for the $180 fee) that will reserve my spot as a freshman in the Fall?

That's the part I don't get. If they didn't have all the necessary information, why 'accept' me instead of saying "Hey! We still need your transcript and SAT scores!"

I am willing to bet your gc also got the letter & went ahead and sent the info. Your scores were probably on the transcript --- it's also possible that MI publics have an ACT list from the state with scores for everyone who checked the box to release info to colleges when they took ACT for MME.

it is possible that they accepted you without any credentials.
I actually got accepted to Fisk University without even applying...
some colleges just do that. I'd contact them to be sure, but it is possible.

Looks like they let me in :)

My counselor sent them my info a while ago.

Thanks for the help, all.
