I got accepted into UCLA but not USC

Can somebody please tell me why I got accepted into UCLA but not into USC? I heard from people that if I got accepted into UCLA then I have a good chance that I'll get accepted into USC. I guess that's not true, right?
I know this sounds rather weird but should I tell USC that I got accepted into UCLA so they can offer me admission?

I hear UCLA and USC have very different criteria for admissions. I also thought at first that if you got accepted to one, you would almost be guaranteed at the other (and vice versa if rejected), but I was actually wait-listed at UCLA and admitted at USC. If you really want to attend USC, I would go ahead and appeal, but maybe not under the reasoning that since you got into UCLA, you should also be admitted to USC.

Sorry Panther for the disappointing news. It is quite common, however, as the two universities look at their applicants using different criteria.

As for notifying USC, I’m afraid it would not affect their decision at all. They make decisions independently and have very different missions, one being public and the other not.

I, too was waitlisted at UCLA and accepted at USC. Definitely have different criteria. I’d bet that USC is more holistic.

Daughter was accepted at UCLA and spring admit to USC.

I am very jelly to you guys! Although UCLA is my first choice, I want to go to USC very much! They even have financial aid!

Yes well she is not at all thrilled with the spring admit…will likely be going to UCLA if not bumped up to fall matriculation after May 1.

What are your daughter’s stats? I really want to know how she got into USC!!!
I thought that I’m awesome enough to get into USC. Boy, I was wrong…

I posted on the admission decision stats thread if you go over there. She doesn’t feel like she actually got in though because of the January start

Well I got accepted to Berkeley and LA but not USC. Strange…

yeah ucb and ucla but no usc for me too

Same :frowning: Accepted at UCLA, rejected by USC…I always thought I would have a better shot at USC just because they DO focus more on the holistic approach…I honestly don’t understand the results this year. It was a tough year for everyone.

Daughter got into USC spring admit but not UCLA or UCB. We are out of state so that may be the difference. She did get into UCSD and UCI (honors program with merit scholarship)

Well I got into neither so count your blessings. At least you wont have to spend 4 years in dreadful, rural Illinois.

My daughter got into USC in 2010, but not UCLA.

sucks to be you…

2160 SAT, 3.3 UW GPA got into both

Last year DS got into (and attends) SC but was denied at UCLA. I think a lot depends on your major. Engineering, for example, is so impacted at UCLA. I also agree that USC aps are viewed holistically.

The same exact thing happened to me! I got accepted to UCLA, and all of my friends got rejected from UCLA. Then with USC, I got rejected, and all of my friends who got rejected to UCLA got accepted! It doesn’t make sense, but oh well. Bruins are better anyway <3

Accepted(Biomedical engineering) USC, UCSD, UCD, UCI, UW and denied UCLA, UCB. Tough decision…right now it looks like USC, but expensive.

i got into UCB w/ Regents and UCLA w/ regents too but rejected from USC…Engineering/CS for all 3

colleges make no sense to me -_-
