Facedown, I am not sure what your application looked like or of the tone of your essays, but from your posts in this forum, it seems like you are arrogant. Confidence is one thing, arrogance is another. If you made it clear in your application that Michigan is somewhat beneath you and just a mere safety, there is a chance you will be turned down.

These were stats Facedown posted in the chances thread. In annother thread he said that someone went in on his name and said all this crap. Maybe someone went in on his name. Maybe he just wants to act like a troll.

I don't understand why some applicants are so dumbfounded that they haven't accurately second-guessed the readers. I think it's time for people to realize that holistic review means holistic review.

It really doesn't matter if you think you've accurately calculated someone's "Michigan GPA" down to the 18th decimal point, or you know their test scores, or you can rattle off their ECs. You still lack information. You don't know what their essays were like (and neither does the applicant, even is they offer helpful assessments like "awesome!" and "really good"). You don't know what their teachers and/or counselors said. Nor do you know how those things stacked up against the recs and essays of other applicants.

Those things matter. Some of these things are subjective, and they are considered as part of a complete package. That's what "holistic review" means.

That's true, but it's not usual that a strong applicant writes very poor essays and a very weak applicant writes extraordinary essays...

That said, I always knew there was a possibility I'd get deferred. I just thought some various hooks in my application would prevent that..which apparently it didn't :(

zkevin, what other schools did you apply to?

Alot:

Cornell
WashU
Emory
Carnegie Mellon
NYU
USC
BC
U of Texas - Austin
Lehigh

MSU/Case Western (safeties)

Apps complete to all schools except for U of Texas atm... :)

I've been reading a lot of threads like this on the UMich forum, and I am now bracing myself for deferral/rejection, and consequently a shameful enrollment in the inferior Ohio State University.

My two regrets:
1. I didn't apply early. That seems like one of the surest ways to secure admission.
2. I cruised through high school on what I though was a great GPA, but my UMich GPA is more like 3.4
I am still struggling to understand the disconnect; on my transcript it says 3.947, and I have been on the Principal's List (3.75+) every semester. I know I haven't been a big overachiever in high school, which I deeply regret now, but I though I was in good shape for Michigan.
I have a 2230 SAT, and I applied to the college of engineering. Mrmetski's deferral story made me a sad puppy. Oh well, everything will be fine in the end.

mastert, Engineering is something of a different animal. Your grades in math classes may matter more than grades in other courses. Similarly, your math SAT will be looked at more closely. You can't necessarily guess your own outcome based on those of students who applied to LSA.

My S. received the following from U-M yesterday.
Thank you for your applicaton to the University of Michigan Division of Kinesiology. At this time, a decision has been delayed on your admissibility for the Fall 2007 semester. A review of your application has been made; however, a final decision will not be reached until later in our processing year.
Due to the large number of applicants for the number of places available, we can only grant admission to a limited number of students, (etc...info on basis for decsions in general).
We hope to be able to review delayed candidates' applications and notify them in writing of a final decision by early April. We will not know how many delayed candidates we will be able to admit, nor the specifiic probability of your admission, until after we evaluate all of the applications that arrive on time.
We certainly hope your interest in Michigan remains strong; however, we encourage you to explor other educational options. Your have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.
Is this Kinesiology's version of a deferral letter, or is there more than one type of letter? They mention nothing about sending in Fall grades or improving test scores.
Also, GoBlueAlumMom did your son end up at Indiana? If so, how is that going? Thanks.

What were your daughter's stats?

jcarol, i applied to the school of kinesiology as well and i was wondering if you got this letter in the mail or if you found this online. also i was wondering what date your sons application to the school of kinesiology was complete as mine was complete 11/03 and I still have not heard anything?

jcarol--
Yes, unfortunately for your S., even though the School of Kines. uses the word "delayed," it is a deferral letter. It sounds exactly like the one my S. received last year where no additional information was requested such as midyear grades. After seeing the posts on several Kines. threads with this class of applicants, the admissions situation already seems very similar to last year. No acceptances, deferrals until mid-April, then a waitlist offer or denial. Although pure speculation, I posted the conclusions our family had drawn from our experience last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=262744&highlight=kinesiology

My S. did not end up at Indiana, although it was one of his top choices. He was recruited to play football at Kalamazoo College and is extremely happy with his college experience so far. We've just learned he made the Dean's List for the first quarter while juggling heavy demands during the football season so we've been very pleased with his decision as well.

CavStudent - My son got his deferral in the mail yesterday. He actually applied and sent everything in by mid-September but they show his application as "complete" on October 20. You may still have some waiting to do. Has anyone been accepted yet?
GoBlueAlumMom - yeah, it's pretty discouraging. He's accepted at Indiana but with the cost we'd like him to have a direct admit to Kelley Business, if possible. He still holds out hope for Michigan but I believe it's very unlikely. His stats aren't great but he has improved yearly --2.7 freshman year to 3.6 junior year (about 3.3 overall) Doing even better this year with 2 APs, 26act, great verbal skills but mild impairment in visual-spatial ability and hand tremors, excellent essays and recommendations, on tennis and golf teams all four years and does regular community service with LD kids, both parents and brother are UM grads. His interests and abilities would be a great fit for Sports Management.
Glad to hear about Kalamazoo. My neice is a Junior there and is spending the year in Japan. It's been a great experience for her and for other kids we know. I wish my son would have considered it but he was only interested in "big ten" schools. According to an MSU counselor who visited my son's high school - K is tied with UM for best, most competitive school in Michigan). Every student I've known to go there works hard and gets an excellent education.

Man thats a real bummer sry to hear about that Jcarol. Anyway what would you guys say my chances are. Im an OOS Male with a 3.8 UM GPA nd a 1990 on the sat, 690 verbal 640 math. I have good EC's captn of XC/Track teams and I have held a job at a fitness center. Do you guys think its likely that i will get deferred as well?

It's hard to say. I'm less familiar with the new SAT scores as he did only ACT. I think your GPA is fine as long as that was for core classes and you took fairly rigorous classes. We visited counselors at Kinesiology and they emphasized that they were looking for the "fit", not students who want to transfer to another program. I've become more concerned as I realize that probably a large number of students are applying to this relatively small program and that recruited atheletes will be placed first. We're going to try to get more direct information about what this might mean.
My older son was admitted to LSA with a 3.3 and SAT 1390 (old scores) but that was 11 years ago. He got great grades and went to Ross and was a Angell scholar. Today, I doubt he would be admitted. It's tough because very capable students are not admitted. I'll let you know if I get any helpful info.

Cav, I think you will probably be deferred as it's a bit harder from OOS :/

I think Cav would have a good shot with the 3.8, even though the 1330 is iffy.

i dont think a 1330 is iffy, so far i know 3 people who have been accepted with 3.7 3.8 gpas and 1280-1300 sat scores, is kinesiology siginificantly harder?

oooo I didn't see she applied to kines...yea then maybe you are a slight match. VERY tough department to get into.
