I got deffered from University Park. Do I have any other choices?

My stats were:

2160 SAT's(1430)
3.3uw GPA
Decent ECs here and there.

I was really considering PSU but only if I got into University Park. Is there any way I can convince the admission committee to reconsider my application?

That's a disgrace on PSU's part. You should have been in.

The best way is to just write a letter convincing them of your interest.

Heavenwood,

Who should I make the letter our to?

Also, what are the chances of them actually reconsidering my application? I realize that they must be getting flooded with applications. Would they actually pay attention to my letter?

E-mail, female

Actually your GPA is low for UP.
http://www.psu.edu/dept/admissions/steps/understanding/fyprofile.htm
And they have more applications than ever.
If you got into a branch that is a good way to get to UP eventually.

The bigger issue is likely all the kids with high GPAs who have no intention of going, just use PSU as a safety. They get in, don't go. So the odds for kids in the middle or low end are reduced. That is one of the down sides of all those kids applying to 8, 10, 12 schools...

hey sushi, id give them a call.

rlm919, I was one of them, lol..

No, it's no disgrace. At least until HeavenWood becomes admissions director @ PSU. It's reasonable to assume that'll not happen.

Again, this is #s game @ PSU, being pinched at both ends this year, and yours are not special, notably your grades ... for PSU, UP. YOU on the other hand are fine and vitually all aside from 100 or so places would be quite happy to have your app in their stack.

The issue though is not what other places want. What do YOU want. btw, there is only one way to learn the answer to your question. Clue: It's NOT on this forum. Go ask. Worst thing that might happen is you have precisely the same situation you have at present.

And if you determine YOU really want PSU, then you can have it with a year's detour at another location than UP.

Frankly, with scores like yours, you probly should have done a bit better in your HS, if you want to find a cause for rejection. But you know that already. PSU would much prefer to have someone with better grades, lesser scores. It reveals more potential motivation for succeeding in an arena that calls for self motivation. Simply this ... that future behavior's BEST predictor tends to be past behavior. So if they desire the students who will likely perform "best" then they admit those who've done "best" in the past. Not very complicated. But don't take this personally. It's merely numbers.

No sense worrying about the dam that's passed under the water, though. What's plan B?

Whistle Pig,

I wasn't contesting PSU's decision in any way shape or form. I already know my grades are low. I was just asking if there was any possibly way I could ask PSU to reconsider my application for UPark.

Unfortunately everyone wants to go to UP. And if you say, then I won't go at all, it likely will not sway them. As was mentioned in another thread, they already have their housing filled at Altoona so they are not wanting for enrolling students.
You can try, but you shouldn't get your hopes up.

Yes. Write and call and visit. 3 ways you can ask. Do you believe you merit a 2nd look? If so, ask for it. If not, move ahead.

HeavenWood said it was a "disgrace." It's no disgrace for the U or you. Keep your head up, and keep doing your best. That's all you can do.

And you've got about 4999 other choices, give or take a few hundred colleges. PSU is not the only brain factory on the planet. Don't allow yourself to get fixated on this one campus. And Lord sadly knows there are plenty of drinking apothecaries coast to coast as well.

And I return to what is common knowledge ... if one REALLY wants PSU ... then jump at the chance for a commonwealth campus for a fall or 2. They're fine places, and in many respects provide far superior undergraduate experience for their students to UP. And remember too, almost half of the UPers don't make it back for 3rd semester. What they thought was heaven turned out otherwise.

Whistle Pig, I say it's a disgrace, because I had a 2180 SAT, 3.2 UW GPA (4.12 W GPA), and decent ECs. I was accepted.
