who got in their top choices without being in top 10 %?
and tell us where you got in ? :p

I'm interested in the same thing! And be sure to say if you had a hook or anything and what that hook was

I got into University of Virginia (got a likely). I am in the top 20% (3.732/4.00 UW). I am African-American with an SAT score of 1860.

I got in last year as a white out of state male at UCLA without a real hook (no sports etc), but I think mine must have been taking college classes in hs, but so many people do that. I was outside the top ten but around top 15% and a competitive public HS.

What was your UC GPA? Was your SAT really high?

UMiami
10char

NYU - i am not in the top 10

^^then you guys must have some amazing sat scores or ECs.

I think you guys should start a thread for getting in w/o being valedictorian or salutatorian... Non-val/sal's are pretty rare at some colleges, but even then the kids would still have been top 10% in hs.

Mcb: Penn Admissions: Incoming Class Profile

People out of val/sal are certainly admitted.

I didn't know val was so important! It's like 45% admitted, and then 30% for sal, and then 18% for top 5 percent. That's a huuuuge difference... you could say that it's because of correlation with other factors for val vs top 5 percent, but not for val vs sal. Wow.

top 50% and jhu right here!

^ how is that even remotely possibe????? My school doesnt rank, but my rank is very similar to yours.

I got into Miami as well, I was around in the top 15%.

I don't really think that it's shocking that anyone gets into a school being outside the top 10%. At a lot of competitive schools, kids in the top 20% are better than kids in the top 10% from another, less competitive school. It really depends on the high school.

I'm in the third decile (with massive upward trend) and will be attending Seattle University

Any Ivy Leaguers not in the top 10% who weren't from Phillips or the Thomas Jefferson School (or schools of that caliber)?

Well I do go to a competitive private where rank is distorted. And I did get a good SAT score and did apply ED. Hopkins took 48% this year so I guess I was lucky.

Not in the top ten or even twenty got in at Cornell from Detroit Country Day. Decent SAT and ACT.
