I got in with a 3.2 out of state

so....there is still hope for you guys who want to apply with a low gpa....

And, I got into the engineering school, which supposedly has a 3.8~3.9 average highschool GPA.

Are you a URM?

i'm curious as well. Getting in with a 3.2 must mean extremely high test scores and amazing EC's or URM status, etc.

agreed. seriously this gives me hope, but how did you do it? =D

asian, not that high of a test score..... 31 best standing 32 combined....
but I had 36s on math and science.... and 800 on maths including SAT IIs
applied november....

So, basically I was a slacker that had potential....

I got into the honors program with a 3.5 out of state...

I got into Umich with 1800 SAT/ 3.9 GPA OOS

My buddy got in with ~3.7 gpa and 23 ACT

well for the engineering score the thing they care about most is your math grades right? And it definetely seems that you have those, so mb they overlooked the other things like your GPA.

dababwi,
Is your 3.2 GPA consistent with the way Michigan calculates GPA? Your SAT II scores shouldn't be a factor for admission as Michigan clearly states that it doesn't consider SAT II.

yeap 3.2 michigan gpa

You must have slam-dunked your essays. I guess you could post them to help us out ;)

Were your math grades strong? How much math did you take in high school?

funny thing is, i didn't write that good of an essay and I got a C on my calculus class because well, i slacked off.... but i did get a 5 on AP calc ab. I also got into University of illinois engineering and carnegie mellon engineering, which are both very good engineering schools.

What specialty in engineering are you thinking of majoring in?

maybe you go to a really tough hs.

thinking of biomed engineering...

i go to a public school where only 40~50% go to 4 year colleges.....

Thanks for posting.

i go to a public school where only 40~50% go to 4 year colleges

Do you live in an economically depressed area? because maybe that has to do something with it as well. Umich does take into account socioeconomic backgrounds. If a bright person that has potential went to a school in a economically depressed area where only half the grads go to college instead of like the 90% or whatever in other schools, of course they are going to look good in the eyes of admissions people. If that is not the case then it was probably your math and science that did it, and I don't think you can slack off in college and breeze through it like you did in h.s. cuz even though you have potential you now need to at least put some effort in college to pass classes especially in engr.

nope, the average income of my town is 20,000~30,000 above the average.

I am your average applicant and I got in.
