I got in!

Thanks newt, I actually already bought my tickets for bulldog days. So I'll be going there instead.

My stats (pr) is my homepage. So you can just check it out. If you want to read my essays or know my ECs pm me. I'll probably tell you my ECs, essays will depend on my mood at the time.

If you need financial aid, completely disregard this message, as it helps people who need financial aid to apply to multiple schools so that they can compare packages.

No offense, but it really bothers me when people apply EA to a school, get in, and then apply to a bunch of other schools anyway.

hahaha why does that upset you? Think someone's stealing your spot?!?!

Hate the game, bjrwrh, not the player.

Amen. We'll see.

Hi all. Davidrune and Newt, It's nice to see you on another board.

I just recieved a priority mail package from Amherst, with an "Acceptance" (not likely, but actually included a form to send in the $400 deposit) letter. This is following a likely letter from Dartmouth, and an acceptance and $60,000 merit scholarship from Grinnell. It makes me feel reinforced (I was deferred from Yale), and like I have wonderful options even if all the others reject me (Yale and Princeton, however, are still on top).

For the record. I am NOT a minority, am NOT a legacy or other affiliation, have no major hook.

What does help is a 1560/760/750/720 with a 4.0 and good letters and ecs, as well as from a small state.

Best of luck to all. I know from Yale EA and the Dartmouth waiting for letters how nerveracking it can be, and trust me, I'm in that same boat.

(Interestingly enough, I don't know much about Amherst. I wasn't able to visit it on my 11 college pilgrimage because of its location and only applied at the last minute. Of course, I knew that if I had (and hopefully will) visited that I would have fallen in love like many others.)

It bothers me because, in my opinion, a restricted EA school should really be a top choice. I applied EA to Yale and was deferred, but I know that I would have instantly chosen to attend and canceled my other apps if I were accepted.

I know how you feel, bjrwrh.

For my part, IF I was accepted, I still would have applied to a few others for the following reasons:

1.) $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. This is a major factor for my family. Although we CAN pay for the college costs, that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be extremely hard to do so. Middle-class families get the squeeze. By applying to a couple of top schools, they may have different financial aid. However, the majority of this importance comes with the second-tier schools that offer merit aid. So, even if Yale was heads and tails #1, a few schools like Grinnell or Franklin and Marshall could even beat out applications to Amherst and the like.

2.) It is not a clear first choice. One benifit that I saw to Yale was that EA was non-binding. I was and still am not able to decide between Yale or Princeton, with Dartmouth close behind. Even so, Amherst could still beat out Yale (not too likely, though).

So, if accepted, schools like Haverford would not have gotten my application. But I would probably apply to Princeton and Dartmouth, Grinnell, Franklin and Marshall, and maybe one or two others (down from 18 schools as it stands now).

Congrats Rune, Nickleby, + cncm! I got the same letter today (I guess they did Priority Mail for US people). Anyway, I'm very thrilled, even though my college choices are now even more complicated.

For those who are curious, I was semi-recruited for football (I talked to the coach a few times on the phone, got "special" purple envelopes to mail my app in, but he hasn't talked to me in a long time). My stats are on PR stats with the username justforgetme. I've also been accepted to Harvard EA and Duke (likely).

I just got my letter today aswell.

Minority (AA), 1450 SATs, tons of ECs (sports mostly), Boys State Attorney General etc etc.

Yay, I got in, too!

I was deferred Yale EA, accepted 2 SUNY(Binghamton and Geneseo, ranked 1 and 2), and got a likely letter from Wellesley.

Like Nickleby's, mine came in a Priority Mail envelope. The envelope was small. I guess the size of envelope and service depends if you're international or U.S.

Here are my stats: 790 V, 710 M, 800 Writing, 780 World, 780 Math IC, 770 Chemistry
GPA 4.4/4.5 (4.0/4.0 U.W. because my school's weird), ranked 1 out of ~100. My school is just average; I don't know anyone else who got in previous years from my school, or anyone who applied for that matter. Also, if you want mu essay, I could give it to you. I could also give extracurriculars, but they're not national, only leadership locally in a few activities.

By the way, I was trying not to go to CC for Lent, but I was so excited about getting in that I broke it for the 2nd time. Now I have to go to Church tomorrow and say that I broke! ;)

Wait, so you guys are people that Amherst really wants, right?

Also, I'm asian, and I applied for Diversity Open House and didn't get in. I was worried because I thought that meant I might not get into Amherst, but my guidance counselor said it was probably because I wasn't "diverse" enough (i.e. not a URM). Now, anyone who didn't get into Open House doesn't have to worry!

Add: Yeah, I think colleges send earlier acceptances or likely letters to people they are sure they will accept. They do this because the students might otherwise choose another (perhaps better) college over theirs, and accepting kids early might get them more attached to the college... and it's working!

i got the accetpance today too.

i'm not recruited athelete, minority (unless asian counts...yea right) or anything special like that (i think...)

i was harvard EA deferred, and i have gotten 3 likely letters thus far.

i guess this is to help get us to go to amherst, cuz they know the majority of the applicants they're sending letters to now don't accept amherst's offer, and take HYPSM or something

Hmm... I am asian and I went to the DiVOH.

AHHHHH!!!

I got my letter yesterday... I wasn't there to open the letter though (was away at a drumline contest).

This is a HUGE relief, after having been deferred from Harvard EA and getting no acceptance/likely letters except from UT Austin (automatic admission for top 10%).

Okay, for those who are interested, here are my stats: Asian, female, LARGE public school, rank 10/1251, 3.98 UW, 4.38 W, 1560/800/790/740, various musical activities (band, church choir, jazz band, drumline, etc.), teaching Sunday School, tutoring, speech & debate, etc.

So when does Amherst send the rest of its acceptance letters, and why did some of us receive it this early? Just curious.

Good luck to everyone! :D

I think it's April 1. I wrote all these dates down on the calendar, but now I can't find it the calendar... probably buried somewhere on my desk. So it might not be April 1 but just a general "early April."

I'm nervous now. Amherst is definitely one of my top choices, and I really would love to be accepted.

Nickleby, I hope you go for Amherst over Yale...

fo shizzel

to echo dreamsicle, AHHHHH!

this acceptance letter is the greatest news i've recieved this month.
