fallenchemist - Question for you… does Tulane Superscore the SAT?

fallenchemist - My son has been accepted and received a $15K merit aid. His new SAT score just came out today and he raised his superscore by 20 points, from 2150 to 2170 (GPA is 4.0+ wgt, and tons of ECs - varsity sports, music, clubs, community services). Do you think they will reconsider him for the Founders $20K and/or admission to the Honors Program?

My son got in even though it was definitely a reach school and the school guidance counselor said not to bother. I think applying Early Action - Single Choice helped. At best we were hoping to be wait listed!

about how long after you are accepted online do you get the letter with scholarship info?

Another question for the expert, fallenchemist: Does Tulane consider things like community serviice or extracurriculars when handing out scholarships, or is it just based on test scores and grades/academic rigor? Thanks!

Whoa, so many questions. Let me start by saying something that I haven’t for a while, just because so many on here are somewhat new. I don’t work for Tulane (it only appears like it, lol) so just be clear please that anything I say is only an opinion. Perhaps a reasonably well informed opinion based on being an alum, being a Tulane parent, and following quite a bit what is going on at the school, but an opinion nevertheless. Just so we are all clear on that. The last thing I want to do is mislead anyone, so that is more for my own peace of mind. Thanks.

Having said that:

thecrew: I honestly am not sure if Tulane superscores or not. I have heard people say both yes and no. I will try and find out one way or the other, but at this point I am just not sure.

aparentoftwo: Kind of relates to the previous question. If Tulane does not superscore, it won’t matter. However, I would have to say that 20 points probably won’t matter anyway. I hate to not be able to tell you positive opinions on this, but the Founders is unlikely. A better strategy might be if he has a great semester this time, meaning all A’s or very close to it, then you might be able to go back to them with that plus the slightly better SAT scores and see if they will reconsider. I just wouldn’t get your hopes up. In either case, the Honors Program is not offered to students below the Presidential and some Distinguished Scholars, so that I think is out of the picture. However, the main thing about that is to work hard to graduate magna or summa cum laude anyway, which would mean he would have gotten into the Honors Program. A 3.6 after freshman year will get one in. Keep in mind that he can still take honors courses even freshman year, they are not restricted in that way.

sharkie - 1-2 weeks usually.

Waitingitout - It seems quite clear to me that it is almost entirely based on stats. However, my gut feeling and some observations tell me that if someone is borderline between two scholarships, the rest of the record could push them one way or the other.

OK, you guys wore me out. Especially after just having had a fantastic meal at Jacques-Imos.

thanks fc! okay

this is another silly question, but what are the scholarship possibilities? and like the most usual requrements for those? I know this is all opinion and things always change, but i have no idea whatsoever what the possible scholarships are. any information would be great just so that I could have like a basic knowledge haha.

Thank yoUU!!

So I found out I got in about a week ago, then I got my admissions letter and apparently they’re giving me the $20k a year scholarship? Is this rare or are they just trying to get people to come to the school?

eswanson - It depends on how you define rare, and yes of course they are trying to get people to come to Tulane, or at least students they feel are bright and engaged. You must have done well enough in school so far and on the SAT/ACT to merit a scholarship of that magnitude. Congrats!

I have written longer essays on this before, but the short version is that Tulane knows they have to get people to look at them a little more carefully than say, a Vanderbilt or Duke. Tulane has a lot more going for it that many realize in many different ways, and by making the application free and pretty easy, getting answers back quickly, and for those accepted that are highly qualified, awarding them significant merit scholarships, they get those very students to spend time looking into Tulane. They often then realize for the first time what a great school it is, come visit and, enough times to make this strategy worthwhile, decide on Tulane over some higher ranked schools.

One thing that doesn’t show up in stats or is not always easily communicated, is how accessible most of the Tulane profs are. I have talked about this many times also, and tons of current students have come on to concur. I am in NOLA now with my family for T-day, and my S is with us. He is a senior at another college and has never been to NOLA. We went to campus yesterday, and we (my D, a current sophomore, and I) were showing him and other family members everything. When we got to the building where his major department was located, he and I went off to see one of the profs office on another floor, a person he admired in his field of study. He was just curious what he had posted around his office and the department. It turned out the prof was in his office busily working on his next book, but he asked us if we needed anything and we got into about a 20-30 minute conversation. My S was very pleased, and they will now stay in touch. This is just very typical of the Tulane atmosphere. Is it 100%? Of course not, but it is quite pervasive.

sharkie - It really depends on whether your 3.6 is weighted or UW (I assume the latter), where that puts you in your class, and how strong your schedule was (i.e. number of AP or similar classes taken). Your 35 ACT is of course extremely strong. I would assume that if the unknowns are commensurate with your ACT score, you will get one of the two top scholarships (not counting the DHS here), but it is impossible to say more than that.

My S applied early action in October- 3.4 gpa 2000 SAT legacy at Tulane strong high school- Jesuit- and we have not heard yet. Are people in Florida hearing or might there be a back log from this area? Getting anxious!

questioningmom - Is his Gibson account showing his application as complete? If so, when was that?

Turn around for me was one day after I got my Gibson account. I also didn’t have very strong stats for Tulane but other students in my school haven’t heard back yet.

My son received his admissions letter but it made no mention of any merit scholarship being awarded. Have the others on this board received both notices together? Do I assume correctly that he will not be receiving any merit scholarships?

It would be in the body of the same letter as his acceptance. It is not two separate letters in the same envelope. Therefore it would appear he did not get one.

Thank you for your reply. Guess we keep looking elsewhere

gables79, I don’t mean to be rude, but just because your son didn’t get a merit scholarship it doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t afford to go there. He might still get a decent FA package.

I was accepted but only got $7500 despite having pretty solid stats (2100 SAT). A little disappointed, very slim chance of me ending up at Tulane now…

thanks for the info, fallenchemist… but what are the scholarships?

sharkie - Ah, I see what you are asking, I made it more complicated, lol.

$15,000 - Academic Achievement Scholarship
$20,000 - Founders Scholarship
$22,000 - Distinguished Scholars Award
$25,000 - Presidential Scholarship

Then there are two that you need additional applications for. The DHS (full tuition) which you know about, and the Community Service Scholarship, which is $5,000-15,000 but I think has usually been just $15,000 lately.
