PLEASE help me, I am reading all these college threads and totally intimidated by the 4000 (sat 1600, 3SAT2's all 800s) people. Scary!

I think you have a shot at Yale, MIT, Stanford, Princeton but I wouldnt bet on it. I think you have about a 50% chance at Duke. Honestly I think you need to apply to more schools in the Duke range as realistic reaches and slightly below as matches. My advice is to seriously consider adding two of Penn, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown as reaches. Also as match/ reaches two of WUSTL, Northwestern, Cornell, Rice, etc. I have seen this on CC alot, applying to HYPS and then local schools as safeties. You will very likely not get into one of HYPSM (you might also but dont bet on it!) Your realistic reach range is the schools I mentioned. Right now with a realistic rejection from HYPSM and Duke, you will end up at your local easy school. Adding the schools I mentioned will really help your chances at ending up at a top place.

I speak from personal experience. I had almost the exact same stats as you. I had HYP Duke Brown and on my list. Luckily a friend told me I needed better matches and I added Columbia and Northwestern to my applications. I got waitlisted at H, Brown, and Princeton. Luckily I got into both Columbia and Northwestern and had some options.

MIT will have trouble with your iic and physics scores. HYPS are major reaches. Good chance at Duke (but raise rhe SATIIs!). I agree with Slipper, at schools just a notch below, you will have a good shot.

I got into Princeton ED with 1490 SATs, lightly higher SAT 2's, and a similar GPA. I think I really tried to SHOW myself in the admission. You know? You don't wanna be another pre-packaged, starry eyed, polished applicant. NO COLLEGE is looking for many of those kinds of kids. SHow yourself and its up to them to decide IF you would fit into the college. They will reject you if they dont believe you will. No worries though... of course it does help that I live in alaska.. .

Colleges are not as interested in your scores as they are in knowing who you really are. Don't be intimidated.

I must add here that the top schools are not always the best places for you. I think I agree with slipper1234.

Give WUstl a shot, also try USC and maybe NEU.
You have excellent chances there.

What's your intended major?

i feel you man. that's the attitude.

A weighted GPA of 5.308? What's the scale? I've never heard of a 6 point grading scale.

What a ton of comments to come home to! I see what you all mean - and I did consider applying to Northwestern (the only one I thought of before slipper's list).

But it seems pointless for me to apply to all those other schools when I don't even want to go, and I don't want to waste money by applying to random schools. Also, I come from a really competitive school (ranked in the top 50 in Newsweek's list of high schools, link if you want it: http://www.csh.k12.ny.us/highschool/data/TheTopHighSchools.htm)

Duke is REALLY familiar with my school, so I've always thought that I had a pretty good chance at it. Either way, Duke isn't my first choice. I will not have a chance to raise my SAT2 scores for any place besides Yale, due to submission deadlines. Yale, incidentally, is my first choice. I didn't apply to the single-choice early action because of a chance at a good scholarship at my local school (which is actually NOT a bad school at all).

I realize that I am really mediocre on paper, but maybe - just maybe - I could have some really strong essays? I am a member of a variety of clubs/activities, but I have an EXTREMELY intense interest in nearly all of them. My academic workload is pretty generic, except for my strength in math (which, to the adcom folks, is pretty generic anyway).

Could any of you guys tell me what you mean by a pre-packaged, regular, applicant? What would set me apart from all the other applicants that have similar stats?

Thank you all VERY VERY VERY VERY much for the honesty. I would hate to get false hopes!

Oh, and my intended majors are Mathematics, Business, and a minor in Epidemiology or Toxicology (most colleges don't have Epidemiology) and possibly another minor in a form of Engineering (if a college will allow me to double major)

P.S. I'm a girl

As for will's comment, my weighted GPA of 5.308 is from a 6-point scale that is ranked according to the following:

AP classes/College courses = 6
Honors classes = 5
Academic level classes = 4 (this includes Gym)

bump because I am desperate for replies! :)

try to raise your SAT IIs if you have time.
the ivys especially MIT do look at SAT score as the second important factor( other than transcript).

Are you from NY?
have you considered Cornell? Because I think you might get in wit all those ec's.

Nope, i'm a southerner! I'm uneasy about applying to more than 7 colleges, simply because it gets SO expensive!

hey just real quick...dont put "The National Society of High School Scholars Nominee" on your app...its a scam for your money and a joke..its not a real thing-everyone gets it
