How hard is it to get into Engineering at NCSU compared to getting into UNC? I applied to Biomedical Engineering at NCSU. My stats barely got me into UNC:
-1780 SAT
-4.5 weighted/ 3.4 unweighted

I did write a much better essay for NC State though.

Also, if I got into Biomedical Engineering, do I HAVE to major in it? Can I major in Computer Engineering even though I didn't apply to it?

It will depend somewhat on the breakdown of your SAT score…specifically your math score.
Admission to the college of engineering generally requires a strong math score and good math performance in tougher math classes in h.s.

Getting into State is a different process than applying to Carolina because at State you are applying for the major you want rather than just general admission like at Carolina.

Yes, you can change your major if you are admitted to Biomed but want to change to computer engineering. It’s all in the College of Engineering so should not be a problem.

thanks. i got a 590 on sat math. i’m also currently in ap calculus bc. by the time i graduate i will have taken every honors/ap math class offered: alg1, geometry, alg2, precal, ap stat, ap cal ab, ap cal bc. never got anything less than a b in math.

My DD was accepted EA at State into the College of Engineering - Biomedical Engineering.

SAT - 660 CR/670 Math/740 Writing
GPA - 4.83/3.96
Rank - 5 of 522
In-state student - large public high school
She is taking AP Calc BC and AP Stats this year.

I also understand that incoming freshman who applied for BME are not yet matriculated into BME. There are courses to be taken freshman year and then the student applies to the Biomedical Engineering program after freshman year. So if that’s correct, if you are thinking you want BME, you would have to take those engineering classes the first year.

Chapel Hill does not offer engineering, so top NC students who want to study engineering choose NC state, which makes their engineering program highly competitive. The average CR/M scores are 1220-1420, so that 590 on math puts you on the lower end.
