Congratulations to all of you. Now, you are pre-frosh. chuckle
I encourage you to gloat quite a bit over the next week or so. And then, suddenly, stop - because people who get fixated on this period of victory never move to the next one. It will be humbling at Harvard if you aren't humble when you get there.

ice i don't think you came off cocky at all, just excited about your amazing choices! And you know what? Even if you did, you have every reason, you have accomplished what most people dream of...good luck!

No. They're all excellent, but Harvard is number one in the world. Sure, the others might be slightly better in certain areas, but the overall package you get at Harvard beats anything you get anywhere else in the world. The architecture at all three is incredible, and I'm not sure about the prices but I'm guessing they're roughly the same. Reputation is also obviously far better from Harvard. Another thing to remember is that George Bush went to Yale. People who go to Yale and Princeton try and kid themselves that they're the best. People at Harvard know they're the best.

I got into harvard, yale, and dartmouth. I got rejected from Penn thouh >< . congrats to everyone that made it and good luck to those that are waiting/denied.

the ace is back you are so conditioned. i can tell by the last statement you made.

Conditioned? I don't go to Harvard, haven't even been accepted. I doubt I'll make it. I can still recognise that it is the best place in the world - that won't change, wherever I go. I would still be happy with whatever choice I got (when I come to apply), I'm just saying that someone with such an incredible opportunity would most likely regret it later on if he/she chose a 'lesser' university over Harvard.

^ And what about specific programs at Princeton/Yale, such Wilson and EP&E? Although Harvard is ranked #1, another school might be better for an individual.

Now Harvard is my fave and all, but still this is so stupid. Harvard, Princeton, Yale, and Stanford are all equal with very small differences. No one can say that Princeton is better than Harvard or any other way around. The difference is between Coke and Pepsi. They are the same, but depending on who you talk to, Pepsi might be better or vice versa. Depending on the student, all the schools might be bad. Not every person that graduates from an Ivy league school is perfect. I know a guy who went to Yale who is now a substitute teacher (Because he screwed around in college). Another guy who goes to State U can be much more successful.

So basically, it is up to the individual and what they want to make of their school. If they work hard, even safety schools can provide excellent educations. The difference between the top schools is minimal, because it varies from student to student.

Well there's clearly no contest between Coke and Pepsi either ;)

Look I've obviously heard, and thought about, what you guys are saying many times before. I used to agree. I've come to the conclusion though that some places are simply 'better' than others - ie better opportunities, better chances. There is no doubt in my mind that someone who goes to Harvard and screws around will end up doing worse than someone who went to a state university and worked hard for his degree. But equally, there is no doubt in my mind that someone who went to Harvard and worked his ass off would have a much greater shot at reaching much greater heights in life.

If someone wasn't accepted by Harvard, then what you say definitely applies - you can go anywhere and still do well, and you shouldn't sweat it but instead be happy wherever you go. But if you were accepted into Harvard, it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, far more so than the other universities, and I am fairly certain that there would be many times both as an undergraduate and in later life that you would regret not having at least tried the Harvard experience. I would say almost everyone who is accepted into Harvard is good enough to get into Yale or Princeton. I would not however say that almost everyone who gets into Yale or Princeton would get into Harvard.

Some might say that success isn't everything. I completely agree. But I think someone aiming for that top tier of universities is certainly looking for academic success and most likely success in his career - someone ambitious in other words. I believe this is most readily available with a Harvard degree under your belt.

In my mind the only real argument for turning down Harvard for another university then is, as savoirfaire mentions, specific programs not carried out at Harvard, or higher-ranked courses at various other universities. But in the majority of cases, Harvard (compared to Yale and Princeton) offers most courses people are after and at an extremely high level. I think the Harvard experience as a whole though is better value for your money, as are the reputation and contacts you will make while you're there.

I think several people on this thread have gotten into Harvard but not other places.

Harvard isn't right for most people. For example, if your passion is CompSci, MIT or CMU might be a better choice than Harvard. Or if you're low on cash, you shouldn't put youself in debt just to go. Will there be times when you regret it? Yes of course. But I bet people at Harvard sometimes regret they didn't go to Yale.

Yale, Princeton, and most other top universities are just as expensive. Harvard, on the other hand, is pretty generous with financial aid.
