I got into Rice and UT Austin, but my Rice package is twice as expensive. What should I do?

Rice is charging $30,000 per year while UT Austin is charging $15,000. What should I do? Is it worth it going to Rice?

Rice costs double what UT costs.

What is your and your family’s financial situation? Is the $15k difference significant for your family? Would you need to take on debt for either or both and if so, how much? What do you plan to major in? People can’t answer with no other info.

Depends. If your family can afford to pay the higher cost, then go to Rice. But if they can’t, and either you or they (or both) would have to borrow that additional $15k/year, stick with UT.

We got very different FA packages from two similar and similar cost colleges. And both were not near our calculated EFC.

Agree with - if you have the 15K, Rice is a very good school. If you don’t, bank your 60K (or let your parents keep paying their mortgage) and go to UT.

It’s pretty simple really, unless you want to go through an appeals process for Rice and try to get that extra 15K (which would be a lot to ask for).

Besides financial wherewithal, what are potential goals/majors?

What are your parents saying about paying for the difference??

I am going in undecided, but I plan on going to law school in the future.

Rice is not going to match public school tuition.

If you are committed to applying for law school, I’d strongly urge UT-Austin. Rice is unlikely to give you much of an advantage.

If you are going to law school, go to UT-Austin, thats a no brainer.
