I got jaundice in the middle of my finals and my grades might be too low. decisions affected?

Hi… in the middle of my finals, I found out i had jaundice, (which is why i was always tired and sleeping 14 hours a day). I fell my grades would have dropped…

Will my decisions get affected…? How/should i inform the colleges about this?

I needed extra time for the exams i took before i found out i had jaundice. My doc said that if i had come earlier he could have written a letter to the board to give me a scribe and extra time :frowning: im really worried about this. My studies were really affected by the condition and i don’t want my admissions to get revoked because of this. (also in my app i mentioned that maths has been a challenge for me because i took it up late and im doing much better, but i feel i have not done well in my finals… could someone please guide me how i should go about this?

If you are a senior, it will depend on how much worse you do than expected. But in this case, I think I would talk directly to the colleges, once you actually know what grades you received, tell them what happened and that your doctor is willing to confirm it. They’ll let you know if it is an issue.

Thank you so much! yes I’m a senior. I just stopped writing in the middle of my math paper because my head just starting hurting really bad and i think ill just pass. So about 30 points less than my predicted.
Thank you so much for your help

Given that you say “maths” and “Predicted scores” I will guess you are from outside the USA.
If you were in the USA, I would get that doctor’s note and have my Guidance Counselor write a note to the colleges explaining what happened.

@mathmom my results come out in june… currently i have a private and a public school (i got into the scholars programme ) as my top choice schools. Would you suggest i pay the acceptance deposit at both places (just to keep my spot) ? my condition is pretty valid and i do have the blood test and ultrasound reports as well as a docs note with it. But just in case (lets REALLY not hope so though) i have to take a retest and they just choose not to listen to my plea. what do you think i should do ?

@bopper yes I’m an international student… thank you for your help! Ill be sure to get in touch with my guidance counsellor as well if something happened. thanks !!

You have till the end of the month right? Call (or ask your GC if they can call) the colleges in question before you do anything. I think you have a very reasonable case here. Since a retest is also possible, (when would that be?), look into what that would entail and offer that up as a possibility if the colleges offers for example a conditional acceptance based on retest results. You need to know what your options are, every college has slightly different rules. It’s not just a matter of public college vs private college.

@mathmom hii… the deadline for the deposit is may 1, and ill know my results only by the first week of june. :frowning: So, the ‘Compartment’ (retest) is in July… so it’ll probably take another month for results to come. Wont get my graduation certificate.

Chances of me failing are pretty low since they check ‘leniently’ and give marks for for writing formulae as well and steps.

But if i get a lower grade i think i can apply for a retest and check w the colleges if they’re okay with that… but the thing is… i have math physics english biology and home ec… and english and home ec went very well and bio went fairly well… my ‘heavy’ subjects -physics and math went well much much worse than the mock exams.

So since im getting my results a month after deposit day do you think i should call the colleges before may 1 and just let them know?

If you are explaining this medical episode to officials, find out what your condition actually was, "jaundice" won't be the explanation. This might be a translation thing. For your own well being if nothing else.

Call the colleges, explain the situation. Ask what they think you should do for various likely scenarios. I agree that you might want to see if there’s a more medical term for what your illness was. Jaundice can be a symptom of a lot of different things.

@mathmom @Sybylla Yes, it’s “Drug induced Hepatitis” (from the acne medication i was taking). Thank you so muchh for you help!

I hope you are feeling better!!
