Just how many ap test can you take and receive credit for in the school of Pharmacy? I heard that they only accept 8 credits max (that's 2 tests right?), but I'm not really sure. If so, I gotta start cancelling some ap tests...Also, if any ofyou can provide me link to the documentation that'd be cool. thanx.

I am sure its true about the 8 credits... I know plenty of people in the pharmacy program. Remember-- 8 credits = 1 science course though since science courses are two semesters. One semester courses like english or history are 3 credits.

Don't have the documentation though..

i heard taking ap calc test is useless cause its better to take calc 1 agan in college

*** is up w/ rutgers?! Most ivies allow you to ap out of up to a whole semester of ap classes, and rutgers (pharmacy at least) has all these crazy restrictions. This is really ****ing me off; I just hope this isn't a way for them to make more money.

Lol how would it be a way for them to make more money? Pharmacy is a really rigid program, they have your entire 6 years planned out for you. All other Rutgers colleges allow you to get AP credits up to the wazoo (which many other colleges don't)... pharmacy is a special, unique program though and if that's what you want to do, i don't think it's all that bad since you knew it is a 6 year program.

I spoke at length to Dean Kollar about AP credit, specifically Chem, Bio & BC Calc. Getting a 5 on any of these tests gives you 8 credits, yes, the maximum allowed to bring into the Pharm program. If you bring 8 credits, in your 1st semester you will be enrolled in one of the electives you would normally have taken 2nd semester Frosh year.

Keep in mind, to place out of Calc, you need a 5 on the BC exam, along with a 4 on the AB subscore. If you do NOT accept the AP credit for Calc, you will need to take only 1 semester of Calc - not a bad trade off. Hence, by transferring Calc, you get 8 credits, but only skip a single class. Since gathering enough credits to graduate is not an issue in this program, this does not seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Chem & Bio - if you get a 4 on the exam, it is only equivalent to 1 semester of college science. Not a wise move in my humble opinion to take a 2nd semester science class at college without getting the foundation from the 1st semester. What the college expects you to know for the 2nd semester and what you remember from high school can be very different and a possible set-up for failure.

Either way, he strongly advised that DS take the lab, which is worth 1 credit. While the dean does not like you to place out of science, his preference seemed to be Chem, as you will need the Bio again 2nd semester Soph year.

I'd be happy to help with any other questions about this topic, as we discussed this in person with him on 2 occasions, and I do believe I have the story right. Bottom line is that you send all your AP scores to Rutgers. They will send you a letter telling you what scores are acceptable and for how many credits. You return it checking off your intention, accept or decline for each AP score.

Already got a 5 in bio last year, aiming for a 5 in chem this year. I'm also taking Physics (Mech), Calc AB, and Comp. So that means I can only ap out of one subject? BtW, is the lab part of bio or is it an elective?

Bio lab is included in the course (4 credits per semester). Chem lab is its own 1-credit course ("intro to experimentation"). Chem itself (the class) is 4 credits per semester as well.

so basically the only thing im gonna AP out of is a humanity with US History....

be warned though-- US History only gives you one semester (3 credits) of the full year US History sequence... don't asked me why, i was surprised when I got my credits in

sanosuke, was rutgers the only pharmacy program you applied to?

and actually, for most pharmacy programs, they either limit AP credit, or do not take science AP credit at all

Im looking to take the A.P. Language and Composition test this year and the A.P. English test next year to place out of a Writing class that you are suppose to take freshman year. Ive heard that its a required class that they try to flunk you out of on purpose and avoiding it is a very good choice. Am i correct in assuming that a 4 on either Language and Comp or English will grant be the required credits so i dont have to take this class?

BTW my information comes from a pharmacist i work with who graduated a few years ago and a currect 4th year student at the pharmacy program.

Not really; sort of entered the program b/c of its prestige after my other college plans fell through...

Parian- No idea about the ap credits, but a friend told me the same thing about that writing class (expository writing right?). Looks like I might have to start studying.

why would they deliberately make a freshman level course difficult? it doesn't make sense... maybe it's just that a lot of freshman enter with writing skills that rutgers doesnt consider up to par...

also, when i was considering rutgers, it didnt make sense for me to take AP credit for science courses anyway because to me, they seem extremely necessary as a foundation before the upper level pharmacy courses.

I tend to agree that it makes no sense for a mandatory freshman writing class to be a weed out course. I can certainly see an introductory course in a major used to separate the men from the boys, but writing, nah.

As far as science AP credit, since you will need the Bio in a higher level class, that point is well taken. However, you really have no need for additional INorganic Chem, therefore it is logical to place out of Chemistry if you have the 5 from the exam.

Looks like I can't test out of that horrible english class after all; the Pharmacy program won't let me (ARGGGHHH!!!!). The link's below if anyone needs it.

Now I need to find a way to cancel my ap comp test and maybe even calculus and get some of those outrageous fees back. Does anyone know the policy for this kind of thing? Is it too late to cancel?

Calc I is listed on the basic PharmD requirements. As I stated earlier in this thread, getting a 5 on the BC Calc exam, along with a 4 on the AB sub-score definitely places you out of Calc. While you need to have a minimum of 5/4, you are only granted 4 credits.

The expository writing class is also on the list of basic requirements. I do not know about placing out of the writing class --- maybe it is an option, but not clear, as is the case with Calc.

I would just sit for the exams. What if you decided PharmD is not for you? In that case you would be able to accept all the AP credits!

Go for it and good luck!

This thread needs to die. Everyone relax, it's only april, take the AP tests, and worry about the credit you'll be getting for them later. That is what orientation is for.

Maybe money isn't that important to you, but I like to save every buck I can (Asian = naturally cheap; can't help it). Throwing away money and wasting effort on tests I don't need to take, especially when I'm taking quite a few of them, is very, very, pointless. I'd rather do some research, albeit a little late, and figure out which ones I should focus on, and which ones I'll never need.
