I got waitlisted..;(

Just received the email today.
Dear M:

The Committee on Admission has reviewed carefully all applications for August, 2008 admission and has voted to place your name on our wait list. We received over 18,000 applications for admission this year--far more than in the past several years--for 3,170 spaces. The competition was intense and we found ourselves unable to offer admission to all those applicants who would have been strong additions to this fall’s entering class.

Anyone knows how many candidates are usually put on the waitlist? Thanks.

wait, how have u already heard? are you overseas?

yeah, do tell

decisions aren't up yet, right?

waitlisting is the ultimate mehhhh..... i should know. I got waitlisted from WashU. I sure hope i get into Virginia

I got waitlisted, too.

Yeah, I'm international.

UVa is notorious for waitlisting a loooooooot of applicats, making the waitlist a pretty bleak prospect for a lot of people... so I'm sorry so break that to you. A very low percentage of students make it off the waitlist :/

U.Va., along with Harvard and Princeton, will have to accept fewer and waitlist more at first because their discontinuation of Early Action means that they cannot project their yield rate on acceptances as accurately as in the past.

Maxine:

Here is some of the historical data on UVa’s Waitlist Statistics.

My guess is UVa will extend about the same number of Offers of Admission as last year, maybe a few more, but nothing really significant. However, with the elimination of Early Decision Admission for the Fall of 2008 incoming class, I expect the University anticipates a somewhat lower yield (i.e. the percentage of folks who accept their Offers of Admission). If that lower yield does become a reality, UVa will probably take more Waitlisted Applicants than in past years. Just how many more is impossible to judge at this point in the process.

Obviously, students who are Waitlisted should make plans to attend another college or university. The chance of being admitted from UVa’s Waitlist will still be remote. Good luck.

2007/2008
4,130 offered Waitlist; 2,426 placed on Waitlist; 159 Admitted from Waitlist.

2006/2007
3,231 offered Waitlist; 1,915 placed on Waitlist; 145 Admitted from Waitlist.

2005/2006
3,247 offered Waitlist; 1,848 placed on Waitlist; 83 Admitted from Waitlist.

2004/2005
3,017 offered Waitlist; 1,809 placed on Waitlist; 37 Admitted from Waitlist.

2003/2004
2,560 offered Waitlist; 1,535 placed on Waitlist; 63 Admitted from Waitlist.

2002/2003
2,029 offered Waitlist; 1,157 placed on Waitlist; 150 Admitted from Waitlist.

2001/2002

2000/2001

Thanks for data.
Well I am not particularly sad. But still, UVA is a decent university and my chance of getting in seems very bleak.
Good luck to the rest!

what were your stats that got waitlisted?

i got waitlisted as well. i guess im going to BC now.

damn one of my best friends got waitlisted and now he has to go to tech... ouch.

Its sad, kids a genius and didn't do **** in high school... UVa is missing out on this one

Va. Tech's a great school, fun, and beautiful.

um okay there is nothing wrong with tech. its still a good school and their engineering program is most definitely better than UVA's. and your friend probably got rejected because he DIDN'T do ****

Yeah, imagine that!

D was waitlisted last year and ended up going to Tech Honors and she doesn't regret a thing! She is as happy as can be and she is an English /French double major. So there is hope. Plenty of top students end up at Tech.

on another note, according to last years stats.....

As of right now those of us offered a spot on the waitlist have a 3.8% chance of acceptance

Once everyone signs up/declines the waitlist, acceptance chances nearly double to 6.5%.

oh boy!

haha, so basically we're all shoe-ins to get off the waitlist.

yea, as in we will have a better chance of shooting ourselves in the faces and living

umm....afro that post was just a wee bit strange I have to say
