I Got Waitlisted..

What should I do next? Lehigh is my top choice school! I'll be heartbroken if I don't get admitted! :(

How should I go forward?

Tell them!!! Very important, Lehigh is a small University (compare UW or UM)1200 each year, so they do have a chance to take look at everyone’s essay, score, ECs and get personal… if you are overqualified wirte a letter or something and tell them Lehigh is your first choice and why, if you are underqualified send in addtional supporting docs will help

I am not over qualified nor under.

My SAT scores are at their average, Im involved in alot of activities, my essay was good, im a minority, my gpa is a 3.8.

Yup, tell them they are still your top choice school and you are still interested. I told my friend to do that, and they replied thanking him for the letter, etc etc. They didn’t say it would help them consider taking him off the waiting list, but I’m sure it is a factor. They don’t want to end up taking kids off the waiting list that decided to go elsewhere, what point would there be in that?

First, see if your guidance counselor can help you. If not, read on…

There are several things you can do, but more than anything else show lots of interest. Send a letter updating your accomplishments, send a transcript with recent grades and note any scholarships or awards you have received. Don’t beg, but let them know Lehigh is still your first choice.

Then go to the list of schools that accepted you, visit one or two if you can, make a decision, send a deposit by May 1st so you are not closed out and accept, happily, that you are still going to have a great college experience. Then if Lehigh comes through you will be surprised and have a decision to make.

Good luck. :-)

Out of curiosity, when does lehigh make waitlist decisions? I’d assume after deposits are due on May 1st?

thank you for the great advice everyone

i called lehigh’s admissions office today, they said they will start picking people out of the waitlist starting from the last week of april and continue to til mid may.

i’m planning on sending my deposit to either northeastern or rutgers, not sure yet

but i wana go to lehigh soooo bad …

Jassizzle, thanks for the info, and good luck!

Also, were you still invited to the Candidate’s day for your respective academic college? That would be a good opportunity to still show interest. You should email them and see if you could attend.

No I was not invited, should I call admissions and ask them about it?

ar31791, those days are for accepted students only. Jassizzle is on the waiting list.

Momwaitingfornew, he COULD end up being accepted though, at which time it would be too late to attend the day… I was just thinking it may be a good opportunity to show that he is still interested.

This thread raises a question for admitted students who do not plan to attend a certain school. Should students notify a college before May 1 when they are sure they’re not going to attend?

My S was accepted to Lehigh (engineering) and is not planning on attending. I am going to suggest he inform Admissions soon so they can look to their waitlisted students.

Finally, I asked for you here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/686783-appropriate-inform-schools-you-will-not-accept-their-offer.html

Lehigh does include a card in their admissions packet. The one that you send in your deposit with. You can check that you will not be attending and mail that in.

Thanks ar…,

My S hasn’t been too attentive to the contents of his admission packages beyond the decision letter. I’ll have to make sure he does notify the school he ultimately plans on attending!

Finally, yes definitely make sure he notifies the school he is attending! Almost all schools require a non-refundable deposit (a couple hundred dollars) to be sent in by a certain date (Lehigh - May 1st).

how likely is it that they will go into the waitlist anyways

i’m an applicant for the business college

Getting off the Lehigh waitlist in the past has never been an easy chore. Over the last few years the number of applicants has increased which lowered their acceptance rate to just 28% last year. They are obviously attempting to become a top tier 1 school, just below the Ivies. Of the number of students accepted they only have space for about 1200 or 33% matriculate from those accepted. This year due to the economic crisis the number of applicants fell to 11,000 which raised their accepted rate back up to 33%. The matriculation rate will still remain at 33%. Therefore, to possibly get taken off the waitlist it would logically mean you would need over 2400 students to turn down Lehigh for some less expensive or more prestigious institution. I believe most schools this year have dramatically increased their waitlists because of the unknown economic factor that might possibly leave them a smaller number of students matriculating than in the past. Lehigh is not need blind at this point but surely can be classified as need aware. To get off their waitlist I think you have to show them interest above and beyond regular waitlist applicants and show them you won’t be depleting their assets. Just my opinion.

My EFC is very high, I wasnt expecting any financial aid from them anyways =

i was waitlisted too. 3.7 gpa, 1330/1950.
i wish i had got in. its my number one and i’m definitely taking a spot on the list.
i’ll try to pull my alumni strings and hope for the best =

yeah i hear you man

im 3.8, 1290/1900 =[
