Where do you find internships and what do you do during "research"? Do you have any recommendations in making your resume look good?

How did you get Wada Housing? I thought that was only for transfer students. How was living in Wada?

Hey,

Thanks for your post about your schedule! I have a quick question regarding that though...

Did you take CS61A without any prior programming experience? Whatever your answer is...I'd just like to know if prior programming experience is a must for this class...

Thank you!

calstudent86 - Thank you so much for taking the time for that post, it's really useful! I'm taking Integrated Bio 35AC this Fall, actually. Was the class difficult? Were there any essays or anything?

Although prior programming knowledge is no longer a requirement for 61A, it certainly does help. If you've never programmed before, I'd recommend taking CS 3L (introduction to symbolic programming) first. Otherwise, if you've taken a computer science class before and know what recursion is, then start off with 61A and you should hopefully be okay. You can always look at webcasts for 61A online (the textbook is also available online) to get somewhat of a feel for the class. Are you an (EE)CS major, or Cog Sci?

wow, excellent thread calstudent86! (better, apparently, than the popsicle one that was deleted....... boo)

and yeah, i'm interested in stories about wada, too! since i might be heading there this fall.

I'm glad you all appreciate the thread! You're welcome :)

My GPA was above a 3.5, but it was my research experience and recommendations that got me in, not my GPA.

The best place to start is career fairs. CalJobs is also great. I worked as a research assistant at a lab that does a lot of EECS work.

I'm not sure what aspects of my resume are good and what are bad, but I will say that mentioning my acting skills strangely intrigued many people. I guess it was differentiating. Differentiation from the rest of the herd is a good idea, although it needs to be done subtly.

Wada is for upper division students, not just transfers. As a Regents' and Chancellor's Scholar, I was guaranteed 4 years of university housing, and I always got my first choice.

I had programming experience from HS. Prior programming experience does not help in any obvious way, as the language in 61A is Scheme, which is very different from anything people are typically used to. However, perhaps my prior experience helped me in subtle ways that I didn't see, and made Scheme easier for me to grasp. It's hard to say.

I didn't find it difficult, and I don't remember any essays. I think it was just exam-based. The memorization was intense, though...but my day-before-exam cramming didn't fail me.

I can't say I have any stories about Wada. Since I already had my network of friends, I didn't go out of my way to hang out with people there. It's not nearly as social as the freshman dorms, but I did see a lot of transfers in Wada hanging out with each other...I just wasn't one of them.

thanks so much for your posts calstudent86, they have been really helpful. However, i have a few questions for you:
1. is it easy to find a research opportunity in CS?
2. when is a good time to start doing research work if i want to apply for a good grad school?
3. how was doing research works during summer? were they paid? did they provide housing? and how many hours did u spend on working in research projects?

did you take any summer classes for any reason?
