i’ve heard about racial tensions at bucknell. i know it can happen anywhere, but they don’t have a population of African Americans (around 4%)

Boston is on my list (I just made a grand list-18 schools that need to be weeded out).
and not wesleyan, only because i live in ct and i don’t want to stay here (yale is the only exception).

SLUMOM- i have reynaud’s… so i absolutely hate winter hahaha, but i live in new england so that’s where i have to go to school (farthest in pennsylvania, but no UIUC, purdue, rose-hulman etc).

but i checked clarkson earlier and i liked it so maybe i’ll visit (: thank you!

CPU, a safety needs to be safe both from the standpoint of affordability as well as acceptance. I know that you favor HBCUs and women’s colleges, but in your case, the clear safety is UConn. It’s a pretty good option as an all-purpose safety.

gadad- i hear that everywhere i go. but i hate uconn =/ i don’t like it there and they don’t have the concentration i want (artificial intelligence, and the like)

There are some awesome schools that provide great career opportunities. A URM female should be able to get into any engineering school on planet earth. I just posted a thread about good CS schools: Stevens Tech, RPI, WPI, NJIT, NYU-Poly, Carnegie… all are awesome schools.

well then you have to think what you want.
RPI in the past year has gotten a lot more difficult to get into, almost overnight, because they were named one of the best non-Ivy institutions in the country, which like doubled their applicant pool. I hear that if you go there, you better like cold and isolation because there’s a LOT of it. If environment is a big deal for you (it’s not for me) then kick RPI off first. It’s got great engineering, and it actually ranks above carnegie in average salary for those who graduate, at around 6th in the nation; around 110k a year, on average, and going up. That’s the main attraction for me
CMU, from what I hear, will kick your butt. It has one of the most rigorous academic programs in the nation. Coupled with a student body that is apparently super competitive (and, from what a few people say, a little snobby) and the atmosphere there sounds like it can reduce you to tears, especially freshman year (That’s what I heard, at least). Though the social scene isn’t awesome (It’s an engineering school) it’s miles above RPI’s, especially because it’s in Pittsburgh. A degree from CMU in anything computer related means something though. Number one in the country for both CS, and CE, tied with MIT, on pretty much every list. Pretty difficult to get into.

Once again, this is from what i hear from the research I’ve done myself: Just word of mouth, no experience.
I’m pretty much in your exact same position, I constantly have colleges flying in and out of my radar, and the more research I do, the more colleges I eliminate, and the more I find… it’s a vicious cycle. For me (and I guess, you) it’s fun; I like research, and it keeps me motivated, but if it starts to stress you out then you might need to put off looking at colleges for a while.

RPI would be bad for me because of the weather/ extreme desolation haha

carnegie would be great, just what i’m looking for, urban and a good standing. i’m not stressed or anything, i’m just anticipating my final decision in spring of next year. i don’t know what i’ll choose, even if i narrow down my list to eight. good luck with your hunting!

Good luck with yours! Eight is my goal, no more, no less. So far it’s been as high as 13 and as low as 4. Anything to save those 50 bucks that might come in handy later.

sirgerbil^ my range has been 20 to 3 lol.
good luck to you too. i have a finalized list of ten and i’m creating a binder and each will have its own sections with all the information i need. it sounds a little over the top, but whatever it takes for my mom to know that i’ve thought everything out lol.

Does not sound over the top at all. I’ve got most of the info in my head, but iti’s getting to be too much. I always have CC, Payscale, and other college sites open pretty much 100% of the time.
