I hate affirmative action

if any one of you think racism has been limited to the degree that the color of the skin doesn't matter anymore, then maybe you should try thinking what would happen if we were to repeal the civil rights acts - after all, if there's no racism, there's no need for civil rights acts.

this is not about affirmative action - i have my own ideas about that, but a paragraph is not enough to fully flesh them out, so i'm not going to bother. but racism being minor; just look at the push against mexican immigrants or the christian right. it's not blatant racism, it's not the vulgar mobs of an earlier era, but it's still well and alive and thriving.

There is limited racism in our society today

..and herein lies the problem with our society in general.

Exactly. The poster who said there is limited racism in society today must not have to go through the great racism that many minorities go through everyday. I can give you numerous examples of how gravely racist people can be as my family and I go through it almost every single day. Please, you may be lucky to live in a very sheltered environment, but many people know better than to think that there is as you quote, "limited racism in our society today."

Anyone who thinks that must be white, and probably lives in areas where white people make up the extreme majority of the population.

There is a lot of racism I'll admit. But Blacks and Hispanics are not the only victims. Asians and Whites suffer just as much, if not more, from racism. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about it. Affirmative action is not the solution. Racism will never end.

Nobody is a stranger to racism, but I doubt Asians and Whites have suffered to a greater extent than Blacks and Hispanics.

are vietnamese ppl considered minorities?

I love AA, if it affected me I would probably think less of it. But for now I have to say I wouldn't really care just because the Asians on this board are so bitter about AA.

Get a life, its not the only factor in admission. If AA was so wrong it wouldn't exist anymore. What advantage do colleges get by Asians (besides "deliberately keeping Asians away from good educations because they secretly despise Asians"). If colleges actually hated Asians, i think we would see far fewer Asians in top schools, which isn't the case.

Racism is limited. People just try to take every little thing anyone says and make it into a racial slur. People pretend there's racism so they have a reason to complain about being disfranchised and crap like that. Even white people pretend there's racism, because they want to be percieved as not racist just that badly.

I guess you guys think that by "limited" I mean "no." I certainly don't. There are some racists, but those few people are hated by almost everyone and have no effect on the general views of society.

So why have only three African-Americans been elected to the Senate in U.S. history?

..facts like these make it evident that minorities haven't come as far as the overwhelmingly middle-to-upper-class population of CC seems to think..

I cant believe you just said that. According to you, gangs, racism, poverty, violence, etc. are all good simply because they still exist?
Colleges want diversity because the media is always portraying a view that "diversity is equality" so colleges are pressured to do whatever it can to create the said diversity. I dont hate AA because it lowers my chances of getting into harvard, but that it doesn't make sense to let a less qualified person take a certain position. Its like, why doesn't the NFL recruit Asians because their representation in football is currently 0%? If the NFL was forced to recruit 10% of its roster as those of Asian decent, then football would be much worse and not worth seeing. The same applies to the workplace. Why let a bunch of underqualified people enter the workforce when there are people with much greater skill and potential that got kicked simply because of skin color?

Black society and white society's goals are different.

Black society wants to be athletic, have lots of sex, and start a family.

White society wants to be successful in life (in an "academic" profession)... then be athletic, have sex, and start a family.

That's why most professional athletes are black and most politicians, businessmen, et cetera are white.

You might say this is racist, but black people will agree.

The fact that there have been three black senators is irrelevant, because black people don't want to be senators anyway.

And who knows, maybe voters chose the more qualified candidate, instead of the darker one?

Okay, I think it's time someone cut the BS and simplified this argument to its true core.

For AA: Blacks and hispanics need favor because the centuries of oppression have lessened their opportunities.

Against AA: Blacks and hispanics only need favor because they aren't as smart as other races. No matter how many opportunities are offered, blacks and hispanics will always perform lower than their white and Asian counterparts. Ergo, offering these opportunities is pointless and counterproductive.

Have I come to the correct summation?

AznN3rd... that was the dumbest thing i have ever read!!! No one is preventing asians from going into the NFL....the fact that most (not all) asians would rather join the debate team than pick up a football is the reason why there are a very limited amount of asians in most sports.

And what is this dumb misconception that the minorities enetering the work force possibly by the use of AA are underqualified scoring 50-100 more points on the SAT doesnt make you more qualified. Having a 3.8 compared to a 3.9 doesnt make you underqualified.

Scoring 300-400 more points on the SAT makes you more qualified. Having a 3.2 compared to a 4.0 makes you underqualified.

Sorry, but that's the most ridiculous generalization I've ever heard.

And you should have quit while you were ahead..

iin77 are you okay? Did you take your medicine this morning?

That's why most professional athletes are black and most politicians, businessmen, et cetera are white."

Ok this takes the cake for dumbest comment ever.... what you said carried no logic nor did it make sense. You might as well say..

indians smell
Blacks are lazy
chinese people have no personallity

Like is that comment really what you want to use to presnet you argument. I thought we were all mature and sensible and in 2007 i would think that people would know stereotypes are false and untrue!!

I disagree. His assertions are true. Different cultures have different values.

By the way, you calling it ridiculous doesn't make it ridiculous. You can shut your ears and scream as much and as loud as you want to remain ignorant, but you'll run out of air eventually and you'll have to start listening.

ixjunitxi, don't you realize that the reciprocal is also true.. that most (not all) blacks would rather pick up a football than join the debate team?

SaveD, I don't think that the argument against AA is based on minorities being innately inferior, it's that their cultures/families don't value education.

An actual conversation:

Nerdy white kid: You're always such a d!ck. You act like you're better than everyone else, and never shut the f*** up.

Smart, athletic black kid: Hey, I'm black, I gotta be co.cky, cus that's what black people want. (Said completely seriously.)

Even the smartest of black people fall into the trap of following what the rest of their culture tells them to do.
