I hate affirmative action

I think that mentioning values like "People from Asian cultures are brought up to honor their elders" is slightly different than saying "Black people only want lots of sex and have no desire to be successful or involved with American politics."

..but maybe I'm just ignorant.

ignorant is saying what saveD and iin77 said...wow....how many African American people do you know...or are you just saying that to be stupid

i think you should look at economic situation, not race. there are poor white ppl and rich black ppl, and vice versa.

since the black/hispanic communities tend to be poorer, black and hispanic applicants can be helped by more economically oriented policy. yet at the same time, poor whites and asians are not left out.

I fail to see the difference. The nature of the statement doesn't change the truth value. I am very willing to be proved wrong.

leah, as SaveD said, it's kind of weak to just deny something while providing no evidence to the contrary.

And I took my pills at just about 6:00 today =-) I'm supposed to warn my parents if I have thoughts of suicide...

My school is about 25% black. It's impossible to deny cultural differences and implied values. Next we'll try to deny that we have different colored skin.

I'm not saying any culture is superior, but it would be ignorant to try to ignore the obvious differences.

By the way, how many black people do YOU know?

The ancient concepts of Confucianism back up the claim that people from Asian cultures honor their parents and grandparents to a greater extent than others.

The entire Civil Rights movement certainly proves that African-Americans have a desire to be involved in politics.

And I don't even feel the need to rebut the other two statements..black people place sex over a desire for success? That's totally insubstantiated, and you know it.

Your argument are pointless... AA doesnt support idiots!! If you look at the top 50 schools all of the have black, hispanic, and Native American population of less less than 7 percent.

That is not a sign to me that they are letting dumb minorities in because the numbers would be far superior but there is still plenty of asains and whites in colleges. Therefor if you didnt get into your dream school you were farrr less qualified then all the asians, whites, and minorities

citygirlsmom, it's irrelevant how many black people I know... Haven't you read The Prince? The mountaintops can be best portrayed from the valleys and the valleys can be best portrayed from the mountaintops. Only outsiders can truly understand and think logically about issues.

That said, I don't know that many black people. But of the few I do know one is on the varsity team in three different sports and has a B avg. One is an exchanged student who knows 7 different languages, is from somewhere in Africa, and plays JV soccer. Five are refugees from Africa who run varsity cross country and have a D/C avg.

You know how many black people are in my five AP classes combined? Zero.
You know how many black people are in my two non-AP classes combined? Five.

No one's preventing them from taking AP classes. Teachers didn't say "I'm not going to teach a black kid."

I wouldn't say it's unsubstantiated. I also wouldn't say it's the be-all-and-end-all rule, as any person from any race is capable of doing anything. But I would say that there's a trend.

Per example, here are the most popular songs recently released by black artists:

Get Low - Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz Featuring Ying Yang Twins

Yeah! - Usher, Lil John, Ludicris

In The Club - 50 Cent

Always on Time - Ja Rule featuring Ashanti

Lose Control - Missy Elliot with Ciara & Fat Man Scoop

Give It To Me - Jay-Z

Come Baby Come - K7

Back That Thing Up - Juvenile

Ride Wit Me - Nelly with City Spud

You can figure out for yourself how many of those are sexually related.

Now then, pair this with the fact that the percent of black CANDIDATES for congress is substantially lower than the black percentage of total population, it would be fair to BEGIN an assumption that black culture promotes sex more than involvement in politics.

Lol, put eminem under black artists... nice.

Heh. Changed.

HAHA SaveD, I have come to the conclusion that your an idiot who bases all his arguments on untrue stereotypes. Media promotes sex. Have you heard the slogan "SEX SELLS"

I think what you need is to get out of that closet you must live in an experience life. You need a real Culture Shock!

How very convincing that was. I will now abandon my thorough and logically sound assertion, and perhaps "experience life" -- oh, you know, buy something with a naked woman on the label, and get my share of culture, namely that of the bootylicious sort.

Music produced by white artists (including classic rock, current pop, etc.) isn't about sex? You're sadly mistaken.

Do you realize that you were raised in such a way that your privilege made it natural for you to register for advanced courses, that education was fortunately your birthright? I'll tell you how many African-Americans are in my AP classes: two. They both come from relatively affluent backgrounds. No other black person in my school takes these classes because they weren't brought up to challenge themselves academically and develop successful study habits. Are they thus unworthy of a college education? I'm kinda sorry if you think so.

You have got to be fuh-hucking kidding me.

You're quoting shi.tty "hip hop" to show that blacks value sex?

Pop -- I'm not going to even call it hip hop -- is almost always about stupid stuff like sex, okay? Those songs are popular because, like someone said before, "Sex sells." You can list as many, if not MORE, pop crap by white people that's totally sex, sex, sex. "Afternoon Delight"? "More, More, More"? Britney Spears' entire discography?

*ing white people. So obsessed with *ing.

Edit: Damn, leah beat me to it. Whatever.

^^haha you're pretty awesome.

They shouldn't be allowed to know race on applications. If they want it to be fair, they shouldn't ask.

the idea that different races/religions have different values is 100% true.

And that's why Jews, who only make up about .2% of the world, make up about 25% of Nobel Laureates. Despite anti-semitism throughout the world, the Jews are still extraordinarily successful.

Asians and Indians also have very strong family values and that is why they are so successful.

Family values dictate the future generations of a given race (or, in the case of the Jews, a religion), and that's a fact.

(and yes, I am Jewish and I am chauvinistic)

^^

I was just going to say something like that.
Jews have faced oppression, so have the Japanese, but they don't get any preferential treatment when it comes to admission.

The whole 'diversity' thing confuses me, because there is as much diversity between me and someone from Hungary as me and an African American...but because we're both white we don't both bring diversity to a university?
