I hate being 'that guy' but... chance me please!? :)

Hey can somebody please chance me? What schools are out of my reach and what schools would you say I have a good chance at?

I'm applying to the Ivys, WashU, Duke, Miami, Emory, UF and FSU.

Objective:
• SAT I (breakdown): 2310 (780 CR 770 M 760 W)

• Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):none

You have a chance at all of them.

Given your jewish activities (I am Jewish), perhaps you should also apply to Brandeis.

You will be competitive at any school you apply to.

The last sentence in particular is cause for concern; although it is a good idea to write about how you’ve grown, you should definitely highlight your strengths if the essay sounds like it’s about weaknesses that you haven’t defeated.

None of the schools are “out of your reach” however a lot of the Ivies are very high reaches; you do have a chance there but it’s small since those schools are so competitive.

You’d be a formidable competitor at Emory, WashU, Miami, UF, and FSU. The Ivys may be reaches, but WashU also superscores so your SAT is looking good in that aspect. As the person above me mentioned, you would either want to highlight your strengths in your essay or show how you’ve grown from your weaknesses, thus putting you in a light that reflects good skills dealing with adversity, etc.

My brother just started his first semester at WashU. If you don’t show any interest in the Ivys, your chances are slim. Either pick one or two of the Ivys to show interest in and focus on or stick with Emory/WashU.

Hey everyone thanks for all the feedback! I was looking at some of the decision threads for none HYP ivys and I seem to compare pretty well with most of them, like Brown Upenn Dartmouth etc so I feel academically I can compete I’m not certain if my extracurriculars are good enough or unique enough or anything like that…

@bobtheboy, I bought a book that is called like ‘50 succesful harvard applications’ or something like that and a big thing was to show that you’re a person and give your character depth so the admissions officers get a feel for your personality as well. None of them are any seriously crippling flaws but it’s more that I show vulnerability and also how I’ve grown in some of them.

@zephyr15, do you think I have a chance at, say, Harvard? That is my number one school. Also I know some people going to Brandeis, but I don’t want to go to a Jewish-dominated school although I’ll probably be involved with whatever Hillel or Jewish-life activities they have on campus.

Brandeis is not “Jewish dominated”. It has Jewish roots but is quite diverse. You should check it out. It offers a great combination of small LAC and top research university where high powered professors teach in small classes and involve their undergrads in significant projects. Its Boston area location also recommends it for consideration. Good luck!

Do you guys feel I have a chance at schools like Harvard, Brown, or UPenn?
