I really don’t know what I should do. I’m stuck in community college and it feels very pointless. I didn’t know that when you went to community college you had to stay until you finish 60 units when I first enrolled. My major is in Urban Planning but there are no major courses for that subject in the district so I’m taking classes that are not getting me anywhere. I tested into the highest Math and English possible and apparently received an F from a self-defense class that I didn’t even know I had (I was not even in the state for that semester) and the teacher refused to sign the petition to take it off my transcript so I feel like that’s gonna suck when trying to transfer to UCLA. The atmosphere of the campuses are not really fun either. If I dropped out could I apply to a university still?
can you go to a different community college near you?
You need 60 units to transfer to UCs for sure. Your CC transcript will follow you wherever you go (I would include a matter of fact explanation about the F if you apply to transfer somewhere else – only stating that you hadn’t realized you were registered for the class – no whining about not being allowed to drop the F). But you could look at non-public 4 years. Is there something near your house that is affordable?
if you completed less than 60 units, the universities will base your admissions from your hs grades and probably SAT scores too. the college grades at any community college will also follow you though, as part of your gpa. Btw, you can file for academic renewal for any Ds or Fs at admissions given that the second time taking the course is a C or better and your F won’t factor into your gpa. But if you want to go to USC which doesn’t honor academic renewal, then go fight it to remove it from your transcript. I believe all UCs accepts academic renewal. Be careful if you retake the course at another community college though, especially with a different number of units. Also, every college student has to complete “pointless” lower division requirements that make up your GEDs, even 4-year college students at UCLA, so that will add up to 60 units or so. I went to a community college, transferred now and let me tell you its a whole lot better out of the “black hole.” Don’t view CC as pointless, not worth it, or have any negative views towards it since your grades might reflect your attitude. I will advise to go inform yourself of all transferred students who made it to UCLA, USC, CAL and other UCs from your CC. Join the honors society if you have to, they have admission consideration with UCLA through the TAP program, and you’re guaranteed admissions to several other UCs through the TAG program. If you want to get headed on specific major requirements not offered at your CC, there’s UCLA extension and open university for all the CSUs to take a course or two while knocking out your GED. You’re still fresh with a lot ahead of you, don’t fall into the negativity.
Finish what you’ve started. There are some things in life which suck! But if you stick with it, you will be successful! Don’t give up! You are on the right track! Life without a college education is hard!
