I hate my classes!

I dread waking up in the morning and studying even for an hour is torture. I just cannot tolerate any of my core classes and its very depressing to think about how much money I am wasting. I just don't know what I enjoy and so I declared pre-med. I am feeling lost and confused, as though I have no career direction. My classes are chem w/lab, english 101, calculus, pre-health, and philosophy. Any advice? Any former freshmen feel this way?

Make an appointment at the college's health center for counseling--you may be suffering from some form of depression--all those varied classes can't ALL be bad-- if you canot concentrate to study , you may need to face up to some issues that are what is really on your mind.

How was high school? What classes did you like, and why? What teaching styles did you like? What class size made you feel comfortable? How much individual attention do you want/ need from teachers?

How is your life outside of class? Are you connecting with your classmates? Are you eating well/ getting exercise/ sleeping well? Doing things that make you happy?

Yes, everything outside of class is going great. I just can't focus on school. I'm getting the work done so far and I have good grades (4As and 2Bs). However, I can't believe I have to do this for four years and it seems like a waste of time. I don't think its anything serious like depression. Its more like I don't know what I want to do for the rest of my life and its really bugging me.

Welcome to college.

You will be dreading the work world even more if you already hate the idea of even doing work for even a few hours.

You don't have to plan "the rest of your life " now. Now is the time to find out what you really are interested in and where your greatest strengths lie. You won't have to declare a major for more than a year yet. See if you can drop the courses you hate most and add others without penalty--explore subjects that intrigue you--forget about what they can be used for at the moment. Use the courses to learn more about yourself--what you care about, what you are good at, what helps you to make sense of the world and what challenges you to show what you can do. Talk to your more enthusiastic classmates and find out why the course turns them on. Maybe some of them would be willing to form a study group with you? add a social component to the pure academics? Go see the profs in their office hours--tell them you are trying to find a "hook" that will help you to feel more personally involved with the course material. Talk to your academic advisor if available. Don't be pre-med just to please your parents--maybe you weren't meant to be a doctor. Maybe college ECs will turn out to give you the clue to what you are "meant to do"? Maybe a drama or music group? or social service to the community? Or work for the school paper? What would you rather be doing with your time? Do you like practical activities more than abstract theoretical stuff? Could you do film or photography, or painting?

Why is homework suddenly awful... did you enjoy school in high school?

Yes, I really enjoyed high school and believe it or not, it seemed a lot less like busy work than college. I did very well in most of my classes and I liked the setup much more. Pyewacket, thanks a lot for your advice. I guess I'll worry about a career later and just focus on learning what interests me now.

Certainly don't worry about a career right now.

College will probably start to seem less like busy work if you can find classes that interest you. Surely high school gave you some idea about what you enjoy learning about?

Are the classes you're in required as part of a core, or did you choose them yourself?

Speaking as a second-year student, who has thought about every career relating to my major during the year and a half of college, and only last month found her calling, i have this to say: something will come up out of nowhere and take you by surprise. I always thought i wanted to b a doctor, decided not to in yr 12, and spent two years fishing around for something else. i tried everything from history, lit, art to physics. then one of my new subjects, in my fourth semester, came in and i loved it from the get go.

reading over this, it seems hard to understand, but what im saying is this: its too soon to know. something will come up when you know more about your area/s, something that wont be able to imagine now.

Well try to do lots of ECs and get involved! gives u something to look forward to!

Yeah.. I really don't like some of my classes either. Although all my classes are only one semester, so I don't have to put up with them for the entire year. And at least now I know what kind of classes NOT to pick.. theoretically it can only get better ;)

I FEEL YOU. I took AP classes in high school so I finished all of my core classes after only two semester in college. This means I had to pick a major so I chose Engineering. All of my classes this semester are hella boring (Pre-Calc, Intro to Engineering, some GIS course, and a Lit). I dread classes and I’ve been half assing my homework because I find it so uninteresting.

I’ve looked into other majors but I’m not all that interested in any other ones. One of my friends told me they hated taking piano lessons as a kid, but after like 8 years of lessons they became really good at it and now really like playing the piano. So idk maybe it’s okay that my classes suck because they’ll pay off once I finally get good at what I’m doing? Or maybe I’m just wasting my life idk whatever.

This forum is really old but tbh I just want to rant a bit. ^-^
