^^^^
Then why you even think about getting yourself into so much debt for undergrad?

^^^

Excellent point. You’ve seen the negative effects of debt, so why would you think it’s now a good idea???

Even if your parents are now “better off,” you say that they are still suffering from debt (maybe from mom’s med school), so why would you think they could afford to pay more than the $20k per year that they’re willing to pay?

That doesn’t make sense.

OP- Make of list of 10 things you LIKE about URoch. Fall in love with the school. Get rid of the negative attitude. Accept reality- your parents cannot afford Rice or Emory, and believe me, they are right. If you cannot do that, then follow the other advice given to you here - take a gap year and look for a different school where you will feel more comfortable; go to Community College and save $ for transfer to a different school. It is very disappointing that you cannot go to the school you “love.” Grieve and move on. You’re a smart kid, you can be successful wherever you go – it’s all up to you!

If people think that all medical schools are full of liberal thinking students, they are in for a big surprise.

Also, please keep in mind that OP is still young and has a lot to learn, especially how to express herself. The fact that she is socially conservative does not make her a bad doctor. Judging by election results in recent years half of the country agrees with her. Statistically speaking half of the doctors do too, they just learned how to express themselves more eloquently.

i am personally so offended by your degrading sentiments. It is ok to believe what you want to believe until it infringes upon the liberties of other people. Why are you claiming The students at Rochester are all “sub-par”? That is disgusting.

^It is not necessarily statistically true that 50% of doctors are socially conservative. You can’t extrapolate like that. Studies show that people with more education tend to be more liberal. Even if it’s true, a doctor should certainly be more gracious.

I agree with most people here: If you don’t like it, then don’t go. Period. What I do find appalling is how you EXPECT your parents to pay for your schooling. Absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know how many students I met at UCLA that were paying for their own education, working 2-3 jobs. I don’t agree with the “they are young” attitude. If you are 17 or 18, you need to know what disrespect is. No excuses. You should be feel LUCKY that you can even get an education because of the struggles your parents went through. I’m an immigrant and will always cherish any damn education I get. Whether it’s from a community college or the #1 University in the World. Let the decision be hers. Only through failure do we learn.

Alwaysleah,

I understand about statistics - I was simplifying. However you will be surprised that there are many more conservative med students than liberal.

You are from CA, so of course you think that there more liberal thinking people. Where I am from, not true.

^^
And, yes, many/most doctors are on the more conservative side. The theory that educated people are liberal doesn’t hold true with the sciences.

Well, that is scary. This is why I intend to return to California after college or remain in a liberal area of the Northeast.

I agree with mom2collegekids and lerkin; yes, most doctors are conservative, at least those I interned with and my mom’s co-works (psychiatrists) in ROCHESTER, which is very liberal overall.

^^^

And that is why I want to go to the South for college.

Leah…it’s not going to be different in Calif.

Premedgirl,

You’ve got to learn how to filter.

You also have to understand that not everything in this life is black and white.

In my experience, it has been. I know many doctors.

lerkin, thank you for your sage advice. If you are a doctor, I would hope that this world has more doctors like you giving advice to aspiring doctors like me.
