I hate this

I'm a rising sophomore. This summer, I've been wanting to work on so many things at once, like PSAT studying, prepping for upcoming AP classes, and studying for math competitions like the AMC 10/12. Every time I get rush of motivation and start working, my mind gets "tired" or something after ~40 minutes, and I don't know how to get myself back on track again. I feel like my brain is way too cluttered, and I have no idea how to "unclutter" it and keep myself focused on my goals. Do you guys ever feel like this? Advice?

Hi. Yes, I’ve been feeling that way lately as well!! Rising senior, so that means college essay, last minute act preparation, and ap summer homework. I’ve been getting a lot done if I go outside. I’m not as distracted. Also it helps if I listen to music. Not much, but maybe it will help.

When you feel that you can’t be productive, go outside for some exercise. It’ll clear your mind. Plus, it’s better than sitting down in front of the computer. Did you know that sitting down for more than three hours a day robs you of several years of life?

Plus, sitting down for hours at a time increases your chance of a deep vein thrombosis (aka likely amputation of your leg or death). I read this in Time Magazine, and it’s scared me so thoroughly that I now get up every 10-15 minutes to get a drink of water, walk around, stretch, etc.

Exercise. Might as well do something healthy when you can’t focus. Don’t worry. It’s normal. Being unable to focus, or feeling that your mind is cluttered, happens to the best of us. The best of the best, however, know how to deal with it and how to rebound.

Focusing is something that you’ll get used to. Make sure you get adequate sleep to focus. Sleeping at 12 AM is a no-no. Also, remove all distractions. No iPad, Laptop, iPod, etc. Just a table, pencils, and your books. Good luck.

sounds like you have a lot on your mind. I’m a rising senior so I feel like that too. Take break and eat a snack, get some fresh air, do some deep breathing, and give yourself a break. You could work on schedule, maybe if 40 minutes is all you can give, than dedicate 40 minutes a day.
