I hate to do this...but another schedule question.

School: Washington State University
Major: Neuroscience

Fall Semester:

Biol 107 (L) (4 hours) - Intro to Bio Cell and Genetics
Chem 105 (L) (4 hours) - Principles of Chemistry
Engl 101 (3 hours) - Introductory Writing
GenEd 110 (3 hours) - World Civilizations 1
Neuro 138 (1 hour) - Exploration of Neuroscience (S/F Grading)

Total: 15 hours

This is what my Pre-Med advisor suggests. What do you guys think?

Thanks.

You have your intro Bio with lab, intro Chem with lab, and English. Not exactly sure what your other two courses cover, but one seems to fit with your major, so everything looks pretty solid. If you are coming off AP or something in high school, you might find it helpful to head into Calc I (or II, or III) pretty early on. It really depends on how strong you are in math, though.

I honestly suck at math...I took normal Calc in high school..and it was pretty bad for me.

World Civilizations is a freshman interest group class, everyone in my dorm takes it.

Neuro 138 is just a intro class to my major. I hope it's not too stressful.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I'd agree that taking Calc right away would be to your advantage. Way back when, I also was awful at calc in HS. I retook Calc 1 first semester of college and managed to get an A- with extremely little effort. Having been through it once made it much easier the second time. If i would have put in an hour a week of study time I probably would have aced the whole thing.

Since you'll have to drop a class, Bio would be first on my chopping block. The only thing is I don't know what the other required courses for your major are and if not taking bio now is going to present a huge problem for you 2nd semester or later on down the line. If it's going to make it impossible for you to stay "on-time" with your major and graduation requirements (and this includes with you taking a summer class or two at some point) then cut the writing...but I don't think that'll be the case.

These are my required core courses, basically the pre-reqs for my major courses (35 hours):

Biol 106—Introduction to Biology: Organismal Biology
Biol 107—Introduction to Biology: Cell Biology and Genetics
Chem 105—Principles of Chemistry
Chem 106—Principles of Chemistry
Chem 345—Organic Chemistry I
Math 140—Math for Life Scientists
or Math 171—Calculus (I think I'd have to take 171 over 140 anyway)
Physics 101—General Physics
Physics 102—General Physics
Psych 105—Introduction to Psychology

These are major core courses (28 hours):

Neuro 301—Exploring the Brain
Psych 311—Elementary Statistics in Psychology
MBioS 303—Introductory Biochemistry
Psych 384—Psychology of Perception
or Psych 390—Operant Behavior
or Biol 438—Animal Behavior
Neuro 403—Cellular Neurobiology
Neuro 404—Neuroanatomy
Neuro 430—Principles of Neurophysiology
Neuro 490—Senior Project
Neuro 495—Directed Research
or 499—Special Problems

I think taking bio now is good for me because Biol 107 along with Biol 106 (2nd semester) are pre-reqs for Neuro 301, a major core course.

Should I still cut it? or should I cut English?

Thanks.

Well the question becomes, is Neuro 301 a Pre-req for the 400 level Neuro courses, AND can you double up on the Neuro courses at some point. Seems like there are 5 Neuro department courses, and so if you have to take them in sequence, even waiting to take bio 107 in the spring, and bio 106 next fall, you'd still be very much on track...

And you do need to just go ahead and take the Math 171 for med school purposes.

Oh..alright cool. Thanks.

I'll add Math 171 and Drop Biol 107.

Thanks again!
