I go to a really small high school. There are no AP classes offered to sophs/jrs, and like 3 total AP classes offered to seniors. There are no IB classes at all (actually, I have no idea what IB is...). We have virtually no clubs (I think science Olympiad and quiz bowl is it and I'm not in either).

So far, I only have taken 1 AP class (AP Comp science; I got a 5 on the exam =D), and that's only because I attend a special magnet school for half the day. It'll probably help that the AP class was the same subject that my major is going to be. I plan on taking AP calc and AP eng next year, and maybe also taking the AP physics test (even though there is no AP physics class).

Anyways, my question is, will UMich see that my high school is lacking in course/EC offerings, and take it into consideration? In other words, will I even have a chance to get in against all the people who go to big high schools and take 7 AP classes, attend 10 clubs, etc?

~Thanks for answering all of my questions; I'm trying to learn as much about UMich and colleges in general ASAP before I apply this fall.

Yes, they take it into consideration. What is important to Michigan is just that you take advantage of as many resources at your disposal as possible.

I don’t know if UMich considers this in “class rigor”, but it can be very fun and rewarding with enough effort, especially if the subjects you study are ones you enjoy.

Yes on common apps they ask “how many AP classes are available” (something like that). And your counselor will put 3. You will not be counted against that (and not just UM sees this, all schools do).

Thanks for the responses so far. I guess I’ll be ok since I did try to take the hardest classes available. I even dual enrolled at a nearby CC so I could take another class that wasn’t available to me.

Quick question, what do you mean by “common apps”? Is that just a term to describe college applications in general?

since you are only taking one ap, u will probably have more time avialibe to self study ap’s.
I recommend you to self study for the ap tests with easy information such as psychology, calc, econ etc. Self studying something like chem would take a lot more energy and would not be easy.

Thanks, I think I’ll self study physics. There are some advanced physics classes here that I’m taking, even though it’s not considered “AP Physics”. On my app, will I be able to write that I’m taking the AP physics test late in my senior year? Will UMich like that?

I think #4 is referring to the CommonApp, a website that has an application that can be filled out once but used for multiple use. However, Michigan does NOT use the CommonApp and has its own application that will be available on the school website.
