Hi. I am a sophmore and I have already gotten 4 C's and I have a 3.35 gpa un weighted. I have taken 1 ap so far and 4 honors classes. The reason I have done poorly this year is that I have some serious health problems that I need to take care of and I have been really stressed out. If I explain this in my college essay's will they understand the 4 C's? Can I still get into a good college?

Explain it in the extra space of the commonapp and tell your guidance counselor about them so it’s not just in hindsight. If there is a legitimate issue, like health, they should be able to understand. However, you must raise your grades from here out forward to show you are capable of the high standards. And a 3.35 uw is not bad. Believe me, my junior year grades were lower than that, and I got into a reputable college. Show your passion in your essay, perhaps how you battled the odds, or do things that are important to you.

You’re only a sophomore, kill that junior year, something they look at alot and show an upward trend. There are many colleges out there that would be willing to take you. You just have to define your parameters and look. You can do it bud.

Hey, thanks!! If I were to bring up my grades in junior year, I still have a shot at like Georgia tech or virginia tech right? I have been leaning towards computer science and Buisness and I have been doing things that show I am motivated. If I get an internship will it help?

Definitely, internships and job experiences, and any extracurriculars help. You’re going to have to raise your grades, but it might be doable. Are you in state for either? That could certainly help.

I am out of state. I am hoping to bring my GPA up to a 3.6ish. Do you think that is possible? I am aiming for Virginia tech, University of Washington and Gerogia tech, and Rensselaer polytechnic

I need around a 2000 sat to get into these schools right?

Ditto to shawnspencer’s advice. i also had a 3.35 uw and got into some decent schools.

Look at the common data set for each school… see averages for sat / act/ gpa… that will give you your answers

You can get into a very good college with even a 2.7 GPA. It might not have a big name, but you can get quality education still. So don’t fear. Just bring your GPA up as much as possible. It’s easier said than done.

The issue here is financial aid. You may get into a decent school, if you pay full freight. But if your family cannot afford the EFC then you will have to attend a lower rankin school, so instead of RPI for example, you may have to attend a state school.

I don’t have the need for financial aid. Is it difficult to get into Rpi

yes, it would be difficult to get into RPI if you kept on this C track. If from now on you can get to the A track, you will be fine and colleges will not listen too much about your saga if the GPA is on a C trend. You may have a bad semester, but not all semesters.

Ivy League is pretty much completely out of your reach at this point.

State flagships are a very much achievable goal if you really work at it and explain.

I am not aiming for ivy leagues. I am hoping for VTech and Georgia tech, rensslaer poly, carnegie mellon, university of washington, university of arizon, u of oregon. Are these reachable? @snappletop

I’ve never heard of Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech and CMU are well out of reach.

The rest are doable with a huge amount of effort.

go to collegedata dot com
That will give you detailed information on your targeted colleges.
You will need to aim for 75th percentile for the SAT scores to balance out a lower GPA.
So, use the summer to study for the PSAT. Think of it as a real SAT. If you go at it with gusto then when you get your scores in December it will show you what areas you need to work on.

I think you are pretty good if you can head in the right direction with grades for the next couple semesters. Another thing to show your potential is with a high SAT score, it doesnt need to be a 2300 or something crazy but if you can score above 2000it will really justify your somewhat lower, but still decent GPA.

UWA and Georgia Tech will be reaches, V-Tech and RPI will be matches. But that’s provided you’re, indeed, full pay (even if your parents can pay, until you’ve confirmed things with them, don’t assume they’ll want to…) and that you get 1900-2000 on your SAT.

@snappletop even if I get straight a’s from here on out, I wont be able to get into georgia tech or carnegie?

is UWA really a reach. That is kind of my dream school?? @MYOS1634 @Runner22
