<p>kradz - You might consider applying to mid-tier schools, prove that you can handle the load, and then attempt to transfer if you still want to. That’s what I would suggest for my own kids if they were in your situation. As a parent, I wouldn’t want to take a high-risk approach, particularly if my funds were in the equation.</p>

<p>For the record, you could also consider going to a so-called “mid-tier” school, discovering that you really like it there, that you’ve underestimated it and it really has a lot to offer, and staying there.</p>
