i have a 3.7 will i get into uc berkeley

i go to community college in the bay area and im a physics major. I have a 3.7 gpa and i really wanna goto uc berkeley. What do you guys think my chances are?

i have a 3.8 will i get into ucla? im a biochem major. prior to all of that i have 1 W and i missed 10 classes total in my entire college career.

i also volunteer for babies who are left abandoned at the hospital and i helped saved a bus full of kids in korea, and received recognition from kim jong II, will that look good enough?

Your GPA is just at the point that is considered competitive for Berkeley.
However, Berkeley truly does a holistic evaluation. They will consider everything you put in your application, so I’d say that no one can really tell you with much certainty that you will be accepted to Berkeley with just GPA alone. You may have a high GPA, but you might be missing pre-reqs; you may have a high GPA but you might not demonstrate genuine interest in your intended major through your personal statements or your extra curricular activities. Instead of making these inquiries (which many people do, so I’m not saying that it is bad), you should just focus on maintaining or raising your GPA and getting ready for the long 6 month process that is the application process (longer if you TAG into another school as a safety).

GPA is NOT as much of a concern at Berkeley as you may think. I had two friends who both had 3.8 averages apply to Haas and one got in. Extra curricula and passionate personal statements will get you in. I was accepted with a 3.34 because of my experiences and honest personal statement. My advise to you is,

Calm down, TAG with other schools if you feel you need fallbacks
Start you Personal Statements sooner rather than later
Apply for a major with a higher acceptance rating

I got into Berkeley and UCLA with a 3.71 GPA as a political science major. So yes, you have a chance. Granted we have different majors, but as others have stated, Berkeley and to some extent UCLA do holistic reviews.

Why is psychology so competitive for admission at berkeley?

@ Pino: There are too many students that want to be psychology majors. Not only is it impacted for transfers to get into, but even 4-year Cal students cannot declare the psych major unless they have the minimum 3.2 GPA. However, in all honesty, a 3.2 should be attainable for one’s own major, especially one that isn’t based on a curve.

one last question, is psychology as competitive as econ, haas, media studies or engineering?

Hmmm what do you mean by competitive? If you mean in terms of competing with other students, it is far less competitive than Econ or Business. In the prerequisites for those majors, many of the classes are based on an assigned curve. That said, only a certain percentage of the class will get A’s.

Subjects like psychology and media studies are difficult to transfer into due to their popularity, but students do not need to compete for grades. That said, if an Econ class gives out 20% A’s strictly, and a Psych class does not grade on a curve and generally awards around 35-40% A’s, then obviously one could surmise that it’s less competitive. Plus, inherently, it’s based on your -own- academic performance as opposed to your academic performance in relation to others’.

If you meant competitive to get into, Engineering, Haas, and Media Studies are all pretty equally even. Each one requires an extremely high GPA…normally 3.9+ or very close to that. Psych and Econ normally require around a 3.80+, which is still a pretty high average admitted GPA
