I have a bit of a problem...

I'm already enrolled at Rutgers however I have a bit of a situation.

I've had to miss two months of school due to severe illness and even had to drop two classes (physics and calculus) because of it. If I put a cover letter saying what the circumstances were along with my final transcript and send it to them, will they rescind my application?

I'm really worried.

Tough call. If you’re already enrolled, I know it still depends on your final transcript. How are the rest of your grades, the ones you didn’t drop? I would seek advice from your current academic advisor.

I have A’s in the rest of my classes.

My guidance counselor said that she can’t guarantee that a cover letter will work but she told me she has had to do the same for students in the past and it worked for them.

In your shoes I would not only have the guidance officer write the cover letter, but also the 2 teachers of the dropped courses, to say how well you were doing (if true!) and how the illness is what caused the drops, not any lack of ability or work ethhic on your part.

Also a letter from the doctor, saying you were under treatment for X during that period. If the disease or its necessary medication makes patients unable to do as well in school as usual, s/he should say so (unless it is really evident from the disease’s name).

Rutgers knows sometimes people get sick and lose time. It also happens to some of the students already on campus. In the AO they need to receive documentation that is what happened, instead of what they also see in some students which is senior goofing off. You have As in everything else.

Have the doctor verify with a note, or give Rutgers authorization to check. Many schools will make allowances in the case of illness. I know of one student whose grades dropped her senior year. When the colleges found out it was caused by a severe illness, they marked her file and said she would not be penalized for those grades.

The medical verification is critical.

i am in the same situation, had to drop chm II. rutgers was definitely not happy about it, making me writing explanation. in reality i believe its no big deal, they just like to be a pain in the ass. If you have a valid reason, then relax, there was nothing u could do about your illness, if u have doctor’s explanation or note, rutgers can’t legally rescind you for missing school. but they can rescind you if your grade drops, like having Ds Fs ect.
