I have a C senior year -- chance me for Ivy Leagues

Please chance me for the following schools:

Stanford
Dartmouth
Duke
UChicago
Brown
Yale
UPenn
USC
UC Berkeley
UCLA

I'm worried because I have a C this semester (I can't raise it and I'm trying hard not to let it fall to a D). I have B's in my other classes and I'm hoping to raise a few to A's.

High school GPA:

9-11 unweighted: 3.38
9-11 weighted: 3.74
10-11 unweighted: 3.57
10-11 weighted: 4.09

In addition, I have taken 13 computer classes at my local community college (all A's). I heard these count as 5.0 classes but I'm not sure.

My essays are pretty good. I have a focused passion (computer programming since 12) I talked about which goes with my major (compsci); 2400 on SAT; great recs.

Please give me the worst. What are my chances?

Please don’t take any of what i say to heart because I’m stuck at home with a concussion and my judgement probably sucks here, but… your sat is incredible and you seem very smart, so why is your gpa so (relatively) low? That may scream to colleges that you just didn’t want to work… however if those comp sci classes bring your gpa up a lot you have a great chance anywhere! Just show your passion and make yourself stand out.

Thanks withoutausername. I just have trouble caring about school, I guess. It’s not a very good excuse but it is what it is. Do you think it’s a matter of raw GPA, or will they penalize me for having so many B’s (and now C’s)?

GPA might kill your chances for all. You didn’t list ECs and recommendations but if those are good I can see you possibly getting to 2-3 of those

Parent who has been through admissions process – for what it is worth, every school we visited (though not the ones on your list) said the first thing they do with GPAs is calculate an unweighted gpa. On an unweighted scale, your gpa is likely at the lower end for most of those schools. Those schools are looking for students who have risen to the challenge of the toughest curriculum, and it doesn’t sound like that is happening for you this semester.
With thousands of apps, reps are looking for the easy denials so they can focus on the close calls. Students with Cs on their senior year transcript make it easy to deny. Every spring on CC there are threads posted by students about “where did I go wrong” – who thought one amazing component of their record would get them in to their dream school, but the overall record was not strong enough.

You sound like you have a special story to tell, about your programming experience. There may be reps who find that compelling.

But please make sure you have schools where you will certainly be admitted (you are in the top 75% of their stats, on an unweighted basis), that you can afford, and that you will be happy to attend. For many students, that is their state public flagship campus – schools which are on rolling admission and take applications after the Common App date.

Do you think it’s a “see a C on transcript; automatically throw it into the bin” kind of thing? Or will seeing a C merely make them more inclined to reject me?

We cannot know the inner workings of the decision process; I understand that with all the uncertainty of senior year, and the agony of waiting, students look for some sign, some glimmer that helps them make sense of it. My heartfelt advice is focus on your senior year – academically and in every other way. Work as hard as you can if your semester is not over yet (our school has still not had finals) and enjoy your classes, your friends, and yes, your family.

And if I thought you (or any senior) would listen – get off CC! It will only keep you up at nights and make you crazy. Read a good book, FB chat your friends, listen to some new music. Find another way to occupy yourself and get away from the worry.

Good luck.

Well unless your set on one of those iv league schools I would suggest you take a look at Carnegie Mellon University it was rated 1 in all computer majors same as MIT and all the others if not higher. and it has an acceptance rate of 30%

myIQisunder60 - If me getting an A- in an honors class, in the first semester of ninth grade, ruins my hope of college, then how does a C senior year not ruin yours?

hiedra, I was trolling. In hindsight I now realize that might not have been such a good idea and apologize.

As a parent, who no longer has a senior But has a high school freshman, I check these boards for information and to share lessons learned from our experience. I took your inquiries seriously, trying not to make a nervous senior more anxious during this stressful process.

To take advantage of people’s good will and waste their time is just bad manners.

I felt bad afterwards and sent a private message to all of the people I trolled apologizing and assuring them that they were not screwed.

^
I don’t understand trolling anymore, as people seem to have misunderstood what it is and seem as though they are “cool” for doing some simple prank such as lying.
Want to see real trolling? Look up 4chan and what they did for Time’s Person of the Year.

well this topic has gotten off topic :)

I didn’t think I was cool. I just personally thought it was funny. Evidently it wasn’t to hiedra and that’s something I apologize for.

Bump; anyone have any other thoughts?
