I have a few questions about ED

Okay, if I apply for ED I at Vanderbilt, and I have a good app, how much of an advantage does that give me? Also, it says I should withdraw all other applications. Does this mean that if I don't get into Vandy i don't get in anywhere? I know with ED 1 they tell you if you got in around the end of December, but does that leave time to try again some where else?

If you apply ED, you are agreeing to attend if accepted (unless financial aid is inadequate to permit you to attend). It is then, and only then, that you must withdraw all other applications.

So, apply anywhere you want, but if you are accepted to Vandy ED, then you’d have to ask all other schools to withdraw your application.

Don’t know how much ED increases your chances, but it’s only a good idea if you’re either very poor (and likely to get full financial aid) or very rich (and have no need for financial aid). If you’re anywhere in between, and it’s uncertain how much aid you’d qualify for, applying ED is tricky because you’ll have no opportunity to compare aid offers. If you need significant (but not full) financial aid, I’d recommend applying RD instead.

According to one college data site the bump could be 10% in the admission rate. However there is no way to know how much of that bump is due to athletes or absolutely top scorers applying as they’ve been directed to. As Dodgersmom said, if you need to compare FA offers then don’t apply ED.

dodgersmom has given you good clarification. But my advice to you would be to clearly read the ED agreement again. It’s plain language – it’s your life. You’re about to embark on adult decisions with adult rewards (admission) and adult ramifications (possibly sacrificing other schools).

Read the agreement carefully. Discuss its pros/cons w/your family. Decide.

“Does this mean that if I don’t get into Vandy i don’t get in anywhere? I know with ED 1 they tell you if you got in around the end of December, but does that leave time to try again some where else?”

No, it doesn’t mean you won’t get in anywhere. You should be working on other apps, though, in case you don’t get into Vandy. In my son’s case, he applied to a school ED but at the same time was submitting applications to other schools. Good thing because he didn’t get accepted at the ED school. It was fine, though, because he already had other options in progress.

You only withdraw the other applications once you are accepted at the ED school and deem the financial aid to be sufficient.
