Hey, here is my situation. I got into Stern much to my surprise. I am deciding between Stern and SUNY Binghamton. I got into the scholars program at the school of management at binghamton which comes with a few perks. I am told the business school at binghamton is very highly regarded in state and I should land a good job. I am still told Stern is in a different league and I wonder how this translates when I graduate. If anyone knows anything about the binghamton program I would appreciate your input on this comparison. I have a few other questions.

I often read on the message boards how cutthroat and competitive Stern is. I went to University day Sunday and the students denied this vehemently. They said there is not intense competition and Stern is so focused on group work that there can’t be. I would tend to believe them over some image on a message board but they are also trying to get us to attend Stern. Can anyone who goes to Stern objectively clarify the competition factor for me?

Workload. I have heard that all Stern students do is work and I have also heard that Stern Students have very little work. What is the truth in terms of workload?

The curve. Is there a standard curve and does it really work against you? How hard is it to achieve an A? What about a B?

Social life. Do Sternies have time for a nice social life? Are you content with your social life at Stern?

Does anyone know of any other NYU/Stern message boards out there where perhaps there is more traffic and I can get some more answers to these questions?

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer any of these questions.

Think about posting these questions on the NYU livejournal. It's pretty easy to set up an account, and you'll surely get a lot of responses. I'm a transfer student considering Stern as well. Here's the link to the livejournal:

"1. Stern is as cutthroat as it gets, students will do whatever they can to get an A over you. Group work is nonexistent in finance courses, and they are the worst part of the school.

The workload is very heavy. Don't expect to do well unless you study 4-6 hrs a day.

The curve is brutal. 10-15 A level, 40 B level, rest C and below

Hard to have a really good social life with the workload.

Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer any of these questions.

Yes. There isn't a week that goes by where you don't have a project, exam, case, due. And when finals come along, you can just park yourself in Bobst all day.

I graduated a few years ago.
I heard the curve isn't as bad now though. Freshman year is by far the easiest since you get to take liberal arts classes, JUnior year is the toughest.

g0ld in response to your thing about binghamton.... Stern is eons beyond this SUNY school , you will have some spectacular opportunities at stern that you couldn't even dream of from binghamton. but on the same token, stern will be harder academcially, but NYU will also be alot more fun socially and things-to-do wise.
