I have a question about laptop weight

This question is really for ppl around my size going to college with a gamer's laptop.
6foot + anyone in the 200's range. So I could get an idea thats not from someone small and who says a 17 inch is too heavy. I do not mean offense.

hello, I am really wondering about the weight issue for laptops with large screens ie 16, 17 inch ones or maybe 20+ but I wont be getting those beasts.

There are a lot of ppl who say 17 inch is too heavy for school; however, I am an athletic person (football lineman build) and was wondering if it applies to me. My school is up in new York and is very compact. About 5 min walk time. I have tried going to the stores to see how heavy these laptops are but it doesn't actually tell me how I would feel after several days of lugging them around.

So me being 6 foot 5 ranging from 250-300 depending on if I am working out. Would I be able to handle a bigger laptop?

The only reason I would like a bigger one is for screen real estate ad my large hands + number key block on the side for math.

I am not computer illiterate and will be looking at Asus, Sager, MSI. Lenovo is nice but too expensive for the things I want.

about:
320gb+ 7200 RPM+
4-6gb RAM DDR3
a GPU thats some what future proof ie ATI 4XXX or 9800+ or GTX 260M
from a 14 inch to 17
quality
perrynn processor with low power consumption so a Psomething like 2.4 ghz
normal dvd player dual layer

laptops:
Sager 8662
sager5797
asus G50
Asus FV80
Hp dv6t dv7t HDX16
MSI gaming series with ATI 46xx

custom laptops - XOTIC PC - custom notebooks - gaming laptops - gaming notebooks

I like to play mmo's and role players I am not a fps person I will be playing strategy and RTS. Will be going into engineering and I prefer to use my computer over my school's. I can get the engineering software.

I will most likely end up getting a 15.4 inch but since the 17 inch laptops are only 200 more after customizing I may sway a little. My school will be providing 1.5K and ill ad to that so Im looking at 2100 after 2-3 year warranty and extra battery 64bit windows. I do have a lcd monitor already and I am using a computer from 6th grade so I am looking forward to this.

I am open to suggestions since by the time do get a laptop I may no longer be a gamer. I am selling y 360 xbox to pay for my 9 ap exams so lame i know but I dont play much anymore.

I'm 6'3"/210 and I don't really think a pound or two would make a difference for me if I was throwing a bigger laptop in my backpack. Right now, I have the white macbook, which is 5.0 lbs and 13.3". I could probably lug around the 17' 6.5lb macbook pro if I wanted to, but most PC laptops that are in the 17-19 inch range tend to be much heavier than the MBP, like 8 or 9 pounds. I used to have an old HP laptop that was 7 or 8 lbs. I could carry it with no problem of course, but less weight is ALWAYS more comfortable, it doesn't matter what your build is. Ultimately, you can probably handle it just fine, but everyone I've talked to with a huge laptop ends up regretting it quite quickly, and they usually sell it and buy something smaller.

Also, a huge screen means a huge footprint, which could be awkward on a small desk.

Once you get past 15", most companies stop designing with portability in mind, so very large laptops are not really meant to be carried around all day.

If I were you, I would stick to a 15" or 16" (max) screen size.

thank you very much I am also worried about foot print and total wieght since i need an extra battery mouse and power brick/cord.

when everything is put together it might be better to get 14 inch-16 inch rather than 17 and 18. so once i can take 14 inch and 16 out: either too small or big. i should be set.

I'd stick with 15 inch. If you have to carry around a few books on top of your laptop it can get to be fairly heavy fairly quickly.

I'm in the 6', 200+ range, and have no problem lugging a 15" around between work and home. I will say that while traveling on airplanes with it, I notice the weight (or lack thereof) when I can put it down. I'm guessing that carrying it around that much every day, plus carrying books, would get old really fast. Thus, I would concur with the recommendation to avoid anything bigger than 15".

FYI: My daughter is a soph in college with the same computer. She has never taken it out of her dorm room except to bring it home during breaks.

It won't be an issue. I'm around 6'5", 200, and I rarely notice when my 15" laptop is in my messenger bag. All the accessories (power adapter, mouse, mousepad, etc) do add weight when I travel, but at all other times, it's a non-issue.

17" laptops are utter overkill, by the way.

If you want a relatively light laptop with high specs and a big screen (16.4 inch wide screen) get a sony vaio fw-290. I got mine at a really good price because of discounts and promotions.

thank you all very much. Ill probably max out at 16 at which lies hp and sony. but most of my top picks are at 15. thanks again.

Why not go small with the laptop and get a really nice monitor as well (you said you have one, right?)

Are you really going to be playing games outside of your room on such a regular basis that it'd matter?

The case you use to carry the laptop will also be a factor in how comfortable or not it will be to carry around. How will you carry the laptop and books? Nice laptop carrying cases can cost $100 or more. Some are even designed to go through airport security without having to take the computer out of the case. Not a big factor for carrying around campus, but it is an example of features to consider.

I’m a much much smaller build than you but I sometimes I carry a 16" laptop (HP HDX 16) and it’s fine. Actually, carrying the textbooks and notebooks is a lot heavier on me. And I usually carry both and the load does get heavy because of the textbooks + the laptop. If you’re just carrying the laptop, then it should be fine.

But as for comfort, it’s definitely more comfortable carrying a smaller model.
