So guys, I was waitlisted by Brown but got into other places.

If I accept to be in the waiting list, and later I’m offered a spot in the 2015 class, can I decide NOT TO ACCEPT said spot? I mean, can I decide to stay in the college I’m already enrolled in (and not for financial reasons)?

Thanks :)

You can, but you should still follow up with a letter expressing your sincere interest (if that’s the case) in being a member of the class.

I think the average is that only 1/3 of those offered wait list actually chose to remain on it.

Overall, your chances are about 1/9 of getting offered admission from the wait list.

I’d say chuck the waitlist.

That would be putting yourself in a complicated position. If the other places you got into were good, then you should just go to one of them.

Yes, you can stay on the wait list and then “change your mind” if offered the spot. There are many students who do that for various reasons. (You decided you love your new roommate assignment, family reasons, reality of homesickness etc) but I would not stay on the wait list unless there is a greater chance you would go if accepted than not. After all it is just creating another layer of turmoil to go through again, and it will stream line the whole cascade for you and others a bit to be honest.

Personally, I would stay on the waitlist unless you are sure you would NOT attend if offered. They know everyone that is offered a spot will not accept, especially since you are notified after the May 1st date. I would bet the list is ranked (regardless of what they may tell you) and it is very easy for them to find the next one on the list if you decline.
