i have a question

on my wait list letter it says that (not accurately quoted) "...we most likely will not be able to offer you a place this year and strongly encourage you to seek or accept admission at another school." has anyone ever gotten a waitlist letter like this but then got accepted, or am i just giving myself false hope because this is the only school i applied to

it depends…what school is this from?

i applied to the lawrenceville school

oh. i got waitlisted at hotchkiss and they pretty much said that they wanted to offer me a place, but there wasnt enough spaces open. but, no offense at all or anything, but it kind of sounds like a rejection to me. that’s just what i think. you should probably get another opinion.

It seems kinda harsh, but then, my son’s rejection letter from L’ville said that there “were candidates with better credentials.”

ummm, OK. Seriously?

it said in the letter that i was placed in the wait list…or is that how schools are saying it now…we are placing you in the wait list to make you feel better but you actually are rejected

"it said in the letter that i was placed in the wait list…or is that how schools are saying it now…we are placing you in the wait list to make you feel better but you actually are rejected "

i seriously dont know about that part (i hope not) but i agree with neato, it seemed a little harsh for a waitlist.

No, there is a difference between WL and rejection. But getting in off of a WL is very slim, that’s why they tell you to seek or accept another school. They are not offering a spot to you, so in that sense it is a rejection, but if something comes up, they MAY call you.

Not all schools put that wording in there. Son’s Groton WL asks him to “wait a little longer with us” and that they “hope to be able to offer a spot” etc.

After seeing the various results from this year, I have no clue why the WL rather than accept or deny. Sometimes, it just seems really random.

but do you know of a situation like this one and then that person got accepted???
(i really hope that my letter was not a sly way to write a rejection, they should just write yes you got in, no you didnt, or wait listed and all the reasons why they decided on their choice. im sick of interpreting data and their broad words. now i really just want the facts! i feel like my eyes are going to pop out from the many hours i have been on this website )

the choate waitlist said something like there is a possibility that you will be offered a spot if you wait with us.

Chairsarecool - I know exactly how you feel.
Sometimes I think our time spent trying to figure out the mysteries of BS admissions would be as well spent reading tea leaves.

Chairsarecool, I think the letter means, the chances are against your admission to Lawrenceville. Apply to another school.

I got the exact same letter. It will be hard to get off the waitlist, but send them infrequent updates of activities and grades. Also, write them a formal letter stating why they are your favorite and how you really want to go there.
