I have a small question...

who exactly are we competing with to get into this school? I mean...I know there are thousands applying, but, what are THEIR 50% range SAT scores? and how do they write essays? and what exactly distinguishes those who get in from those who get rejected? All I hear are horror stories of 1600 4.0 students getting rejection letters in the mail. Because it would make me feel a whole lot better if we were competing with a bunch of morons, lol, but I know that's not true.

i'd say columbia applicants are on top of their s-h-i-t. which sucks. a lot.

but i also believe that columbia accepts people who are truly interesting, not just valedictorians. thats why i applied to columbia ed and thats why i honestly believe i have a shot. my SATs were decent, my essay good, my recs great, my transcript also good, but im no valedictorian. im hoping that columbia accepts me because they like me for person that i am. if not, their loss. i wouldnt want to go to college with a bunch of boring 1600 4.0 students would you?

i wouldn't either. That's acutally why I'm applying to Columbia. It is the only Ivy I'm applying to, and after that, if I dont get in ED, Chicago. i really don't like those who pick schools simply because of their status. There are so many schools that no one has heard of, like Belmont Abbey, or Roanoke College, which could be good places for certain people...

it seems that that is a real factor in their decision, not to have only straight A students so that its not boring.. i'm guessing they have some sort of quota for each type so that they can let in broad variety but still keep their stats up

great students apply, but not your typical great students... ppl who love new york city and are social/cultured enough to want to live there, ppl who are attracted to the core (so lovers of learning), and probably a lot of smart anti-conventionalists who don't want to go with harvard yale or princeton. basically, cool people. and then there are the not so great students who just want to get in because it is considered a hot ivy with nyc and good parties etc.

"and then there are the not so great students who just want to get in because it is considered a hot ivy with nyc and good parties etc."

but those don't last long in that kind of academic environment ;)

good parties?

....might be in for a little disappointment!

Columbia doesn't have good parties, Soul?

haha i've been to a couple... i guess it depends on your taste

i'd say the party scene is pretty average

that depends doesn't it?
cus my friend at columbia says it's great!!! :)

i've heard a lot how columbia (and i'm sure lots of other unis) select people who they think are a very good MATCH to their school.
people who are bright but also who have a lot of character and personality... i think there is probably also a "connection" between the adcom officer reading the app of some applicant who is admitted in the end... if you know what i mean..

i hope so. because my adcom and I had a little chat, and I thikn he seemed to undersatnd my pov. I also had an hour and a half!!! long chat with my interviewer. Is that normal? I've heard most run from 45- an hour...but I'll just have to hope for the best. I'm really hoping they see character.
