I have a somewhat strange question

I have a very broad interest in specific fields, however, the problem is, I am not sure if they are even titled majors. I need help categorizing what major my interests and the kind of work I want to do would fall under.

I want to work with drugs and pharmaceuticals. I want to study the pharmacokinetics of drugs and their chemistry, how they cause what effects they do in the human brain, and engineering of new medicines.

This wouldn't quite be a pharmacist. I don't want to be the guy behind the counter at walgreens. I want to be in the laboratory studying chemicals and concept drugs, but I also want a thorough knowledge of brain chemistry. I want to have a license for experimentation with scheduled substances for research. I want to work with organic chemistry. What's the name for this?

I have had general college education, but it's getting close to time to start focusing on specifics, and before I can do that, I need to know what I need to focus on to achieve what major will cover what I mentioned. Obviously chemistry, but it's deeper than simply that. Please help me form a plan of study and what classes and majors I need to do this kind of work.

Thanks!

Your best bet would probably be to go through some Chem professors’ webpages at your school and see whose interest most closely match up with your own. See if you can talk to them and see what sort of advice they can offer you.

I’d say the area you are interested in is pharmacology. You’ll need at least a master’s degree and probably a PhD to do what you described.
