I have a terrible GPA, but please chance me

Hello. I want to major in computer science or something related to it at Georgia Tech, but my GPA is terrible, which I know is not good at all. I just finished my sophomore year, and here are my grades, all with the weight my high school adds, which is seven points for honors and AP classes:

Freshman year:

Comput/Modern Wrld - 94
General Health - 99
9th Lit/Comp H - 99
Biology H - 94
Acc IntegAdv Alg H - 89
French 2 - 83

Comput/Modern Wrld - 98
9th Lit/Comp H - 92
Biology H - 94
Acc IntegAdv Alg H - 103
Am Govt/Civics - 96
French 2 - 86

Sophomore year:

AP Computer Sci A - 90
10th Lit/Comp H - 89
Acc Integ Geom H - 88
Chemistry H - 82
AP World History - 94
French 3 H - 81

AP Computer Sci A - 94
10th Lit/Comp H - 90
Acc Integ Geom H - 87
Chemistry H - 87
AP World History - 94
French 3 H - 78

Yeah, it's pretty bad... My ECs aren't much better either. I'm in Beta, I go to nursing home every other week during the school year, and I will be the president of the Young Libertarians Club next semester. I live in Georgia and one of my brothers graduated at Georgia Tech. I honestly think my best chances are going to Kennesaw State or something and transferring, but I dunno. The classes I am taking next year are: AP Biology, AP US History, AP Lang, Honors Pre-Calculus, Physics, and I am taking a directed study on computer science and programming. In my senior year, I plan on doing joint enrollment like my older brothers did. I do not think I will be getting into NHS next year, though I believe I will be able to if I get better grades next year (I certainly will without French or Chemistry).

OK… let me convert your GPA:

Comput/Modern Wrld - 94 (A)
General Health - 99 (A)
9th Lit/Comp H - 99 -7 = 92 (A)
Biology H - 94 - 7 = 84 (B)
Acc IntegAdv Alg H - 89 - 7 = 82 (B)
French 2 - 83 (B)
Comput/Modern Wrld - 98 (A)
9th Lit/Comp H - 92 -7 = 85 (B)
Biology H - 94 -7 = 87 (B)
Acc IntegAdv Alg H - 103 -7 = 96 (A)
Am Govt/Civics - 96 (A)
French 2 - 86 (B)

AP Computer Sci A - 90 -7 = 83 (B)
10th Lit/Comp H - 89 -7 = 82 (B)
Acc Integ Geom H - 88 -7 = 81 (B)
Chemistry H - 82 -7 = 75 (C)
AP World History - 94 -7 = 87 (B)
French 3 H - 81 -7 = 74 (C)
AP Computer Sci A - 94 -7 = 87 (B)
10th Lit/Comp H - 90 -7 = 83 (B)
Acc Integ Geom H - 87 -7 = 80 (B)
Chemistry H - 87 -7 = 80 (B)
AP World History - 94 - 7 = 87 (B)
French 3 H - 78 -7 = 71 (C)

UW GPA –> 6 A’s, 15 B’s, 3 C’s = 3.12
GT GPA (+0.5 for AP courses) = 3.20

Those scores are extremely low for GT. Generally, you want the UW GPA to be in the 3.65+ to be competitive. The average admitted student this year had a 3.92 GPA (average freshman for Fall 2010 has a 3.89 GPA). The good news is that you have 3 semesters of grades left. Earn a 4.0 each semester and score high on your SAT’s, and you have a chance.

But, you’re right, your best bet right now looks like a transfer into Tech. There are several schools in Georgia that have guaranteed transfer programs with Tech.

Alright, thanks man.

bumpblox

I dont know about your gpa, but for GT you should have a 1900+ SAT score. So try to bring up your GPA and start studying for your SAT’s.

I’ve done fairly well on my PSATs if that is some kind of indicator of how well I can do on the SATs. I got a 190 or so in my freshman year, and 214 this past year.

bumping for chance

GT is big on stats, so an SAT score like the PSAT score will give you a great shot. I think you’re in despite the grades…which really aren’t that bad.

GT has stated in the past that their weigh GPA more than SAT. Even with a 2400 SAT, a 3.12 would be a tough sale, and not a “great shot”.
