i have D's and C's = rescinded?? HELP

i admit, senioritis has hit me VERY hard from the beginning of the school year. i initially never believed i would get into michigan because my sat's and gpa was on the lower spectrum. my heart and soul was commited to penn state when the decision came in november. however i applied to michigan because its been my dream school since i was a kid. the irony of the situation is...

i applied on december 31st, which isnt TOO late but neither TOO early

i was defered in february. didnt know rolling schools for regular decision sent deferrals. LOL

now heres the problems.. my first semester grades had c's and the biggest blunder was an F in ap calculus for a marking period.

i sent an letter of interest to "explain the F"

local rep said to send rest of mid year report.

i heard back AND was accepted literally 2 weeks after the letter.

now the year is coming to an end and sad to say, my grades rarely improved.

i am in a situation where i could potentially have all b's in my core classes but.. a D in ap calculus. unless i do excellent on the final, my grade looks to be a D.

will i be rescinded with all b's and a D? how bout b's 1 C and a D? or b's 2 c's and a D?

i never thought i would be in this situation that i would ultimately have my dreams crushed. will i be asked for a letter of explaination? summer courses? academic probation? or just a warning? however, i feel that i have a "legitiment" reason to explain my struggles.

i am truly scared and have fallen into depression. i have no motivation to live because of the possibility of being rescinded. please, any response or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

please no "should of known better" "sucks to be you" "should not have slacked"

All Bs and 1 D should be ok but could still be enough for Michigan to rescind your offer. One D and one C or worse would likely be the end for you though.

If you slide by and get in, I suggest you shape up. Michigan is seriously much more challenging than high school.

thank you for the feedback, i appreciate it a lot. i believe i will get all b’s and MAYBE a C in ap calc, but i doubt it because the teacher is challenging. if i do end up with the D, should i send a letter of explanation asap or wait for them to contact me?

If I were you, I would get in contact with your AP calc teacher and see if there’s anything he/she could help you with. Unless the teacher is a complete ******, I’m sure they’d be more than willing to help you get your grade to a C if you honestly put forth the effort. And you should put the effort in - this is college we’re talking about, and getting rescinded from Michigan could potentially have an effect on your future. I would try as hard as possible, even though I’m sure everyone’s already told you this. I would be surprised if they rescinded you for one D, but a C and a D is a different story. 2 C’s and a D and I would be surprised if they DIDN’T rescind the acceptance.

And to echo what Alexandre said - Michigan is (I’m sure) much harder than high school, as it is here at Cal, so shape up because you’ll be in for a treat come college if you can’t work on that.

thank you for the information. unfortunately, its one of the teachers that refuses to round a 89.999 to an A. also, our final is a “practice” ap exam with no curve. which makes no sense because a 60% can get a 5 on some years. but… you need a flat 90% to receive a 5 and ultimately an A .

and yes, i understand exactly what alexandre has mentioned. i worked fairly hard throughout high school but i never believed i would get into a school like michigan. i always had a small glimmering hope but, my laziness along with personal reasons lead to me falling into a deep hole.

i truly hope i do not get rescinded, however being deferred then accepted immediately after a letter of interest makes me wonder if im being “watched” or on a list with applicants who are on the hot seat. o.0

Talk to your teacher and appeal to her/him to give you a C should you do well on the final. Don’t give excuses, just admit what happened and that you are over it, as your final clearly shows.

If you end up with a D in AP Calculus, I would wait for Michigan to contact you, but be ready to explain what happened, although senioritis is pretty hard to explain. Still, all Bs with one D should be ok, even if Michigan asks about that D. I assume you were admitted into the LSA.

IF i was to be considered to be revoked, will i DEFINITELY receive a letter asking what happened? or is there a possibility that i will be rescinded right away without any opportunity to explain? because i have pretty legitimate (well in my eyes) reasons for my struggles. mostly the basic personal problems, family problems, financial, and etc. however, i do not want to specifically say it over the internet due to privacy issues.

Sharkfin is right. Go talk to your Math teach on Monday and ask her/him what you need to do from now until the end of the year for you to finish with at least a C if not a B and do it! You will have three months in summer to have relax and recover!

haha trust me, if i could i would do everything in my power. however this teacher is very old fashioned with no if and or buts. or w/e the saying is. the score i get is the score i should receive is her motto. i calculated all of my grades and i need an 81 flat 4th marking period to receive a C. however, the final is 70% of my 4th. i dont know about people on college confidential because most are geniuses but a raw score of 80% on ap calculus ab exam is pretty challenging imo. for goodness sakes a raw % of 55 can be bumped to a 80 after the curve on the actual exam some years. at this point, im just planning for the worse case scenario

“IF i was to be considered to be revoked, will i DEFINITELY receive a letter asking what happened? or is there a possibility that i will be rescinded right away without any opportunity to explain?”

If you have just that one D, you will obviously be asked for the reason and will likely not the rescinded. If you have a D with a couple of Cs, Michigan may not bother asking.

“…because i have pretty legitimate (well in my eyes) reasons for my struggles. mostly the basic personal problems, family problems, financial, and etc. however, i do not want to specifically say it over the internet due to privacy issues.”

That’s all good and well. You can certainly talk to those points if prompted, but be sure to own up to your poor performance and accept responsibility. Michigan will understand, but you must admit your own faults in this. I would say the following:

AP Calculus is very tough at your school, a course you took to challenge yourself

You were admittedly hit by the Senioritis Bug for a long part of the year, which really affected your grades

You had background issues (be specific) to deal with such as financial and personal problems in the family that did not help your results at school

Do well on the AP test by the way. If you get a 4 or 5 on the test, you can easily say that your teacher is very harsh and that a D in her class is not unusual, but that as the AP score clearly shows, you were prepared.

alexandre, thank you so much for all your help. i actually have a small glimmer of hope unlike before haha. guess my decision to slack the entire senior year has found its way to make my summer miserable.

oh and kind of off topic but… whats your prediction for the waitlist this year? lot of people getting off of it? or virtually 0 like a few years back? i have a friend waiting on it and id love for him to join me in ann arbor

The admission office was clearly instructed to keep the Freshman class at under 5,800 this year. Given the uncertainty that comes with joining the Common Application, I feel that Michigan will be very conservative this year and take a significant number off of the waitlist. This said, the nature of admissions makes it very hard to predict these days.

Alexandre, i just want to reply and show you my gratitude. i got an 81 so im “set” for a C for the year. thank you for your support and optimism. thank you for taking time the time to answer my questions and give me insights and a real world persrpective. the past few days were very hard on me because i was depressed about what COULD happen. thank you for everything. i feel like a new man and finally believe i can have a fresh start for college and truly enjoy my summer.

Glad to hear it. I guess barking sometimes yields good results! ;)

Remember, college is a lot of fun, but you must stay on top of things.
