****, I have failed.

Right now in my sophmore year for 1st semester, my grades are all B's, B+ and some C's. Do I HAVE to get straight A's next semester to stand a chance with Cornell? Please help, please.

Gosh... are those in standard... honors or AP classes? because there is a big difference between a b in an honors class and a c in a standard class.

All Honors

You don't HAVE to, but to be honest your grades sound pretty crappy as of now. Try your best and see what happens. You still have at least 3 semesters to bring your GPA up.

Haha, crappy is the best term to describe it. Thanks Central Perky, your Awesome.

Like he said, you have 3 semesters. I would go all out if I were you. If you turn it around and get straight As or nearly straight As, then you have a good chance. If not, then well, yeah. (not to say you won't get in, it's just there are so many applicants with straight As, ect)

Hey jcll2002, what do you mean all out? Like nonstop study?

SDMS12, is there a particular reason for your low grades? If your grades are usually really good and there was something legitimate that caused the anomaly this tri(?)mester then you can explain it to them on the common application (there's a section that asks for stuff like this).

Try your hardest and don't screw around. I hate to say it like an a-hole, but if you are really serious then that's what you are going to have to do. Just try to find the "zone"... a good balance of things.

No, not nonstop study. Just do what you have to do i guess.

Maybe someone will be able to rephrase what i'm saying without the slight dickish tone.

Tone = informative/supportive

hey jcll2002, your right man, you sound right and thats what I deserve. Thanks man. My grades were low of laziness and some other issues.

One more question, is it too late to give up for Cornell?

No. It's DEFINITELY not. As long as you do better in the future/dedicate yourself, you will have a good chance, just like everyone else. Don't give up.

But I have no EC's? Does community service as a hopspital hospice count as a EC? I will do alot over the summer.

yeah, it does. What are you interested in? Try to get some stuff in after school that shows what youre interested in.

btw keep in mind im only a HS junior, not some college admission guru (i wish.)

realistically, you pretty much need straight A's. you really don't want C's on your transcript, especially in core-classes.

my advice to you is to stop being motivated to do well in school by your desire to get into cornell because it's clearly not motivating you enough. try to get motivated by a desire to simply get good grades in your classes.

Thanks NewJack88, anyone else?

Bummppp............

If you truly want to get into Cornell that badly, I would say do everything you possibly can to give yourself the best chance. Excuses only satisfy those who make them. Get it together, and you can suceed. If you find that your best effort is not adequate, do not beat yourself up over it, accept that there are many other great opprotunities in life.

Just a question (relating to this) -
Does a C sophomore year in a math class (a bit of an advanced math class)
completely ruin my chances of getting into Cornell? It wasn't AP or Honors, but still advanced. Response would be appreciated!

Your chances aren't 'ruined' because of a single C. You should work hard to bring up your GPA, but it is only part of the equation. There are also test scores, extracurriculars, community service, etc, that define you as an applicant.
