who are ambitious to make their mark on the world' - Johns Hokins. This was written across the packet I got today. Is the college still the same today? A BIG packet with a really cool glossy view book. I was really interested in attending JHU until the aid part kicked in (I am an international seeking significant amount of aid).

Now JHU doesn't provide what we call 'full-rides' to international students. And students maybe rejected just because their need is high. I was wondering why can't JHU save on sending us glossy material to us? The packet isnt really small. Probably as big as an acceptance packet from other colleges ;)

Why can't JHU stop sending this packets to internationals and save the money and provide MORE aid to us? Education has become a commodity if you have money, you get the degree. If you don't, fight for it.

Just ventilating my views. :)

I really loved JHU until I realized the aid part.

The aid policy as it relates to international students is actually VERY COMMON for schools that even offer financial assistance to international students. There are only a small handful of schools in the United States that offer financial aid to international students in a need-blind process. In fact, Hopkins is in the minority of schools in the country that even offer some aid to international students.

As far as saving money by not sending out our viewbook packets ... sorry it doesn't work that way. The money we use for "marketing" is part of a completely separate budget from the money we use for financial aid. If we stop creating these prospect mailings or even stopped sending them to international students who request them, the money saved would not go to fun financial assistance. It doesn't work that way.

^ Pardon my ignorance but why would it not work? I don't think JHU needs MORE name recognition. And I am sure that Marketing budget is not small either.

There are lots of universities that provide aid better than JHU, mostly LACs. I maybe wrong though.

The amount of money saved from such a decision would not come close to amount of money needed to be need-blind for internationals. Hopkins cost over 40k and the marketing materials cost a conservative $10.

Astronaut J, the only schools that will offer an international student a full ride are Harvard, Yale and Princeton. I know of no others that do. And as far as I know about LACs, Amherst takes financial aid into account when assessing admissions. I'm sure most, if not all others do too. Just be happy that JHU can offer you some aid, while many other cannot or will not.

Also, when it comes to university finances--the budget is allotted for the fiscal year and is decided by department. It's not like money from one department can be transferred to another. It's seen as a surplus for that department. It works just like any corporate (or national) budget. Hopefully better than the US budget, but that's another story.
